I really am enjoying this Carolann - I showed my OH the video and he thoroughly enjoyed it and said that it was a shame that we didn't have enough room.

That would be brilliant Carolan, I'm sure everyone would love to see them too. Do I take it the other eggs didn't get through the power cut

No Chuckles all the eggs where dead in shell but I will be putting down some more soon. Here are the pics from today, there is little Moley at the front. they are all feathering up really nicely I will take some more pics as they get bigger, their pen is now half of the brooder room, I will have to sort out something outside for them but I keep thinking its still too cold for the little things yet but thats me being soft I think. Another 2 weeks and they will be off their heat, depending on the weather I will be moving them into the paddock coop so that they will be able to go outside, I have a night ark which is in the paddock but I'm not sure if they will have enough room as they are growing really fast. They are starting to spar off with one another and try to take dust baths in the sawdust, it amazes me as they have not had a mother hen with them yet they know what to do? TTFN

Well, look what happens when I go away for a bit... what a lovely little brood (what a shame about the lost ones) and haven't they grown! Thinking ahead, in case it's of slightest concern, I'm up for either becoming a meal if surplus to requirements or a lifetime of casual sex, as both strike me as worthwhile in chicken terms - though I think I'll grow to be such a fabulous creature the second option's a safe bet.

ps, I've remembered the 'legs up, legs down' thing for fully ten minutes so far, and am thrilled that it wasn't so weird after all.

You could always adopt yourself for real from CA Moley. She wouldn't have to do either of the options then. I bet Little Moley would keep Lulu in line better than Big Moley!! ;D

Welcome back OM hope you had a great time? Little Moley and 4 others are going to another smallholding where nothing is killed by humans, they all live to old age i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/grin.gif they will be going in a couple of weeks as their young son wants to watch them grow up. I still dont know what sex the honey coloured ones are yet so I will keep hold of them a bit longer, if they turn out to be cocks then I shall grow them on and take them to market or put them in the freezer

Well the chicks are 8 weeks old now and have they grown or what? ? I will take some pics later to show you all how they are doing. Yesterday I made an enclosure for them to go out into as it so warm but all they did was sit on the doorstep, maybe today they will venture a little further. Little Moley has started to crow which is quite funny to hear. It turns out that there are 6 of each sex. A friend brought me some Wellsummer eggs to put into the incubator so they will be going down in the next couple of days.

Pics would be great CA. Wellsummers are the really dark eggs aren't they?
I keep finding pheasant eggs all over the place at the mo. They really seem to be dropping bad this year. I hope there are a few scrapes tucked away that are being brooded properly somewhere in all the hedges around!!

Well here are the pic's of the chicks as of today, there's little Moley at the back strutting his stuff. none of them ventured outside but they have made a right old mess in the gangway ripping paper up and scratting sand everywhere. The girls will be going on Friday to their new home and the boys will be going to market when they are a little older.

Carolann, when you say "going to their new home", is that 'next door' with the others as you'd planned, or are you selling this batch of hens as well as the cocks? I'm told there's an upsurge in hen-keeping and pure-breds particularly are fetching up to £20... could be that incubator was a good buy if you select the right eggs!

The girls have been sold and will be moving to their new home on Sunday, dont know if she wants a cock with them but I will ask her. They start laying around 21 weeks old Tig. This morning I put another 29 eggs into the incubator, should have been 30 but I cracked one i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/rolleyes.gif should have had me glasses on. Last week a trio of Marrans sold for £100 but you cant get hold of any eggs for love nor money. Now that lambing is almost over we shall be going to the market one night to see what prices they are making. We may just take the cocks with us. They are all venturing outside now into the new enclosure and look very happy, they can go back inside if they want to but seem to enjoy the outdoors. Will keep you all posted on the developement of the new brood. I'm not sure if George has been eccepted yet by all the white girls, (he is very rough with them) so I'm not sure how many of their eggs will be furtile so fingers crossed, but the brown girls like him.
