2009 is the bicentennial of Darwin's birthday and I don't know if anyone is interested but in the paper today there is a European project about the Evolution of Snails and volunteers are being sought after to help. www.evolutionmegalab.org/As all it entails is reporting certain types of snails, and as we are all in the garden at some point, perhaps one or two of you would like to give it a go. There are other projects being done as well. darwin-year-2009.org/aboutus.htmlRF

Well I've definately seen both the brown-lipped snail (Cepaea nemoralis) and the white-lipped snail (Cepaea hortensis) in my garden, aren't thier markings really lovely compared to the more common garden snails. I've added the site to my faves, thanks RF Worth looking here to see whats going on in your region www.britishscienceassociation.org/forms/events/darwin200/index.asp I noticed there was The Great Plant Hunt which is happening nationwide and involves schools, I wonder if 4P knows about it.

Happy Birthday today I believe!!!
There was a week on him on radio 4 a couple of weeks ago and it was really interesting.
Nearly all the snails in this garden are like those, very rarely see the 'normal' types. I've put it down to being on chalk. I will have a proper explore of that site later!!! ;D
