I'm just curious as to how safe and secure your neighbourhood is. Officially I live in a Suffolk village but it's really a small town because it's got about 8500 residents.
We sometimes leave our cars unlocked on the drive overnight and we've never had anyone even try to steal them or anything from them like car seats, CD player etc. I often leave my garage unlocked overnight and we've even forgotten to shut it a couple of times. It's in full view of the road (although it is about 60ft from the pavement) and there are bikes, power tools, beer, tumble drier, fridge, freezer and kids toys in there. Nothing was touched either time we did it. I must stress that we don't deliberately do these things, and we do usually lock the cars and garage, we're just a bit forgetful occasionally ;D
We never ever lock the shed even though there are tools, a lawnmower, shredder & petrol strimmer in there.
I feel quite lucky to live somewhere that has a relatively low crime rate and I feel that my neighbourhood is pretty safe. I was just wondering how it is for other people.

Where my parents live which is about 8 miles away in the valley (semi rural, small village), you could leave your keys in the ignition with the engine running and you would get a knock on the door telling you about it.
Where I live, however, I have people cutting thru my garden etc and we're in between 2 small council estates with some right rough'uns on them. I only worry about security because of the past history of people cutting thru and the damage we've had. If that hadn't happened, I'd feel reasonably OK cos we've got the dog.
It's a damn site better around here though than it was when I lived in Bratfudd. My car got broken into twice there and I used to lock my car doors when I was driving. I wouldn't walk alone in the dark and wasn't that comfortable walking back home during the day either!

We live in a very rural hamlet in the depths of Norfolk and I am sure it is a very safe place to live. My OH trusts no one though and all our sheds and my studio are kept locked. I always lock the car just as habit but don't feel I have to keep my house doors locked during the day, thank goodness. We have a monthly crime report from our CPO in the parish magazine and I have to say most of the crimes are simply described as "domestic" although there are car break ins, burglary (mainly of farms) and vandalism. Wherever there are teenagers there will be vandalism I'm sorry to say. Don't get me wrong....I'm not blaming the "youth of today". It has been the case all my life, even some of my compatriots when I was in my teens were involved..........but not me of course

No probs here, although we are now surrounded by houses, where once we only had fields. Ive sometimes left my car in the drive all night, with the keys in the door,or keys left in the shed door, My large ish garden is only seperated from the main road and footpath,by a low hedge, where lots of people walk to and from the bus stop, and i dont think ive ever had any vegies pinched. BUT Just across the road, was a garage and petrol station, which has been pulled down, and they are building 3 story flats, which should be occupied next month,so depending on who moves in,things might change for the worst i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/undecided.gif

We are in a quiet crescent off a fairly quiet main road about a mile from the town centre. Our road isn't a shortcut to anywhere so doesn't get used as a rat run, and around half of the properties are bungalows, which are mostly occupied by retired people. There are some families with children but these are mainly at the opposite end to us, and fortunately they seem very well behaved. At times during the week I think you would almost have time to sit in the middle of the road and eat a picnic without much risk of being run over. It really is that quiet, which is just the way I like it. We have been here now for just over fifteen years, although with some neighbours you could probably double that. As such everyone knows everybody else and strangers stick out like a sore thumb. All the same I don't think I would take the risk of leaving the car unlocked on the drive, after all if it's not locked it's not insured. Our back door is the main point of entry to the house and we usually leave that unlocked during the day (when we are in) principally because you cannot reach it without first coming through the permanently locked six foot solid wooden gate. There is no boundary at the back of the house that is less than six feet high, either fence or hedge or both, and certain areas also have very sharp thorned pyracantha strategically placed. So on the whole we can't complain.

I live on the outskirts of a tiny village of about 50 houses if that, we dont get much trouble but we do have some bad uns living up here dealing in drugs and such like . We are about 1/2 mile from the nearest town and the police know who is who there and anything that happens they go to their houses first. We are surrounded by public paths so we get a lot of folks walking. Everything is locked up even mi chucks as a friend of mine down the hill had some stolen.

I live at the edge of a small town which is also an Army Town, and which had a reputation when I was younger of being "rough" i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/sad.gif However, it seems that with the spread of civvy housing that it has quietened down around here, and some nearby large villages now have more crime problems than here. Dare I suggest that may be because they have more Council housing, whilst here is almost all private housing except the MOD part i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/undecided.gif We are one of the shortlisted proposed Eco-towns cos the Army is moving out - not sure how I feel about that i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/undecided.gif I too, like many of you, have forgotten to lock shed, car, house at various times; also left windows open in car and house, and got away with it (touch wood! i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/rolleyes.gif ) Maybe because I am at very end of cul-de-sac and well hidden because my house is one of the back 2 of a 4-block (known as quarter-houses). The two at the front have had a little minor garden vandalism,( usually by fairly young kids in school hols) i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/rolleyes.gif
