Following onto the Bumble Bee thread. Just interested, not a project or anything but when did YOU see your first Butterfly of 2009 ??
Mine was last Saturday 21st Feb sunning itself in the warm sun. Not sure of type but a a Red Admiral maybe ?? Who knows but it looked like one.

Saw my first butterfly today - no camera handy of course. A yellow one - don't know the name - is there a yellow cabbage butterfly??

We saw a big peacock butterfly sunning itself on our front patio when I was out there washing pots on Sunday ;D ID site here for pics of red admirals and yellow whites (as it were) and so on: www.ukbutterflies.co.uk/index.php

Thanks for the link Juliet - it was obviously one of the yellow "whites" - an incredibly bright yellow.

No butterflies around here yet; probably not for a few weeks yet. The birds have started coming back though, so spring is in the air.

Forgot to say that I saw my first Tortoiseshell on Monday it came out of the loft where we have the Hay and they often overwinter in there.

I saw my first two on Monday at the allotment. One was a red admiral and the other was yellow (but think it may have been a cabbage white)
