My M-I-L died this morning, and honestly it was a kindness, the thing is, she has been in a nursing home for 7 yrs, what do we give the staff, if we leave wine and chocolates they have to work and you can't look after old folk if your under the influence, and they probably have to drive home, (the staff) does anyone have experience of this type of thing.

Barbara - sorry to hear your news. My first thought was a small plant for each person but it might be that there are just too many staff to buy a plant each.

I didn't think about some of them being quite young. Cakes or biscuits is another thought but it is difficult to ensure that everyone gets a look in as folk will work different days and may never see sight of them.

Condolences for your loss Barbara. A thank you card or letter is always welcome. If there was anyone special you could send a voucher or gift card for boots or the like.

Sorry for your loss Barbara xxxxx
I'd suggest a tin of roses/quality street and the such like. Not everyone drinks (or likes chocolate for that matter) and if you don't know how many work there you might end up missing someone out. At least if you've got a large tin of chocs everyone has a chance of getting something.
And a thank you card will be appreciated.

Sorry for your lose Barbara. When Karls Nanan passed away, his mum used to go and help out at the home she was in - they appreciated the extra hand at bazaars and things. Also she bought a picture to hang on the wall in the common room - which everyone could enjoy

Sorry to hear this. I think a big tin of quality street or something and how about a plant, or bunch of flowers, for the staff room, assuming they have one.

I gave the Nurses at the hospital where my Godmother died a photo of her (my Godmother) when she was a young Nurse, in an envelope, with a money donation
I wanted them to see her when she was a beautiful young woman and not the poor lady that died in their care
They sent a lovely letter thanking me and said the money had gone towards their Nurses Outing Fund

Hope your OH is coping Barbara at a time when he isn't at his best either Thank you goes a long way to knowing peoples efforts were appreciated, a large tin of biscuits to have with their tea breaks may cover all bases, and perhaps one for the other residents to share? It is always hard, no matter how prepared we think we are x Tig

So sad to hear of your loss Barbara hope your OH is coping. I think a nice plant and a thank you note are good, also how about a bench for their garden if they have one? you could have a plaque on it saying thankyou to all the staff.

Thanks to everyone who replied, we have decided on, a tin of chocs.a box of biccys, and a pot of lillies, she was called lillian, sad to say was, isn't it. anyway, all the sons are chipping in now(3 of them) so it's like one thing each. and a nice card was already on my list of things to do this week. I now have to go and find a pub or somewhere for sandwiches and a drink for every-one. Barbara.
