I have a very much all-time favourite author called Pete McCarthy, whose book 'McCarthy's Bar' is a tale of travels round Ireland, stopping at any bar with the name McCarthy over it. There's quite a few.
Having been stung on an early trip by the car-hire company, he decides to buy a car for another, an elderly Volvo. At some point, he notices that tufts of sooty, feathery stuff is protruding from the huge tailpipe, and concludes, against all logic, that somehow a blackbird has flown up his exhaust. Of course, it isn't that at all, the amused mechanics he asks to fix it pull out some feet of wadding, part of the silencer.
Today, I returned to my car, and elderly Volvo, to find tufts of sooty feathery stuff protruding from the huge tailpipe. My immediate reaction was a 'well, **** me, a blackbird's flown up there, what's the chances of that?'
I tugged gingerly at a wingtip to find it was just sooty wadding.
Then I remembered the story.
Please tell me this is plausible, and not another example of the onset of early dementia. I suppose the fact that I remembered McCarthy, eventually, is in my favour.
If you have been, thanks for listening. OM.

Not up the exhaust pipe OM but some years ago I had a young blackbird in the engine compartment. I'm guessing it hopped in whilst the car was parked, because I heard it cheeping as I drove along, and it was released unharmed on lifting the bonnet.
