I fancy having a go at growing some cherry tomatoes in a hanging basket but I am having trouble getting hold of a trailing variety. Can I grow normal cherry toms and hope they trail naturally, as they won't have any support?

totp, Most every garden centre here in England have trailing cherry toms. You could try ordering online from T & M or any of the others like Mr F but not sure about the p&p???

Hi Totp - you can't really grow normal tomatoes in a hanging basket, well you can try. To start with you might have trouble with roots but the main thing is that they will try and grow upwards again. You really need a hanging variety.
I pay 2.95 Euro for P & P at Thompson and Morgan Germany and without looking I think I have some hanging toms seeds from last year if you would like to send me you address per PM.

The variety that immediately springs to mind Totp is Tumbling Tom, but Gartenperle would also do well in a hanging basket. Whichever variety you choose remember to keep them well watered. It may even be advisable to place a layer of polythene in the basket to help conserve moisture and maybe water absorbent crystals too.

I popped into Homebase today and bought some bargain hanging baskets (see bargain thread) and thought that I would get some tumbling tom seeds but instead I bought these has anybody tried them before? Apparently they grow like grapes but as tomatoes instead. It says plant ONE plant per 12ins hanging basket!

They look interesting Missy. I've grown Gartenperle in a hanging basket and have got some Tumbling Tom and Lidle to try this year. You would be able to grow a small bush variety in a basket Totp, can't think of a variety atm though

I sowed 5 seeds and 4 have germinated, I have put 1 per pot to save pricking out and potting on....

Good result there MRH, do let us know how you get on with them. I'd imagine children would love those tomatoes, they're almost as small as berries.

I think they really look gorgeous and as you say I hope that ours look like that one day.
As they are not F1's we can save the seeds if they taste as good as they look!!

I only put them outside at the weekend Barbara, before that they sat on the worktop in the kitchen by the window....I did keep popping out to make sure that they were ok...I am dreading planting them into the basket incase I lose them.
I must add that when I sowed them I did it 1 seed to a pot so that I wouldn't have to prick them out. They are still in those pots.

I think it was a light problem, they kept leaning to the window, and I don't think I turned them round enough.
