Well done you - if you don't ask you don't get - well, you might not getting anyway but you might have been able to twist her arm. ;D Is your new buy in place yet? Have you put your compost in it?

no Jas...I need to get the garden all sorted first, I want to raise the beds so I need to put some kind of protection along the bottom of the fence first and the person that is going to help me can't get here until mid June now, so I am going to start pulling up the bulbs and getting rid of the deadwood...I'll pot up the plants that I want to keep though so that it is all ready to start.

Oh, you've got lots of plans MRH. How high are you raising your beds. One of our beds is waist high - it is so nice to work at, it is built into the slope to be level with the patio. I love gardening like that rather than on my hands and knees.

only to a foot high and then the one in front will be 6ins.......tall plants at the back and bedding plants at the front..... Well thats the idea anyway.

Can anyone tell me if it is ok to put the old compost from pots that I no longer want into the compost bin? ie....just tip the contents, plant & compost into it?

Post by Jasmine on May 22, 2009 20:50:45 GMT
It might work ok in a composter MRH - I have found several of last years baskets bursting into life on our open compost heap even after that awful winter.

Well I have put it in the place where it will eventually go but as it has to be moved when I extend the beds I have just stuck the bags with the composting stuff in it.....I have 6 bags now, I will be so pleased when I can empty them into it. Looks a lot tidier too without balck bags lying around.

Yes Missy, I just tip everything from hanging baskets and pots that had bedding plants in them straight in to the compost bin soil and all as i;ts soooooo full of roots.

Just to give you an idea of what to expect Missy, I emptied out the bottom layer of our large size black composter this morning and this was the result.... i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/wink.gif This is amost entirely made up of kitchen waste and has been 'cooking' for around one year so the worms are certainly doing a good job.

You can't beat home made comp I emptied 2 of my 3 bins a few weeks ago and have used it all already and both are full again and I'm now filling bags and storing them at the side of the shed. The other bin has 2 butternut squash growing in the top of it Has anyone had success with using just wooden posts and wire netting as a compo bin ?

I would think the compo. would fall through the holes as it rotted down, Chuckles. But that's just my thinking, maybe I'm wrong.

Thats a good point Barbara, the wire has roughly 1" holes though so not to big. I was wondering how successful this type of bin was compared to other types It's a cheap and cheerful way to get my neighbour composting, she has the room and I have some wire left over from when we made the original chicken pen and I have a few old fence posts she could use.

Could you not get an old pallet, Chuckles, and knock up a bin with the wood from that and your posts, go on you know you can ;D

Could you not get an old pallet, Chuckles, and knock up a bin with the wood from that and your posts, go on you know you can ;D Well I've been scouting about Barbara and found that you can line the wire with cardboard, how clever and simple is that I've also salvaged some fencing that could possibly make a bee hive style bin, we'll see what can be knocked up over the next few weeks

how often should you 'turn' your compost?
|
|
|
Post by Ladygardener on Jul 24, 2009 10:56:44 GMT
There's a lot of debate about that one MRH. I try to give mine a twist/turn every week but I'd empty it out and give it a really good mix and use whatever I have twice a year. It does get more difficult as summer goes on because there's so much in it.
