OK, here are my choices (although I'm going to duck out on some because I don't know enough about them).
1. Tree
A majestic oak - there is no finer sight than an oak tree laden with acorns in early September.
2. Shrub
Philadelpus - for the same reason as Andy
3. Bedding plant
Busy Lizzie
4. Bulb
Daffs - to cheer me up in the Springtime
5. Houseplant
No idea !
6. Climber
A clem - probably Montana Primrose Star
7. Herbaceous perennial
Assuming an Arum Lily is classed as a herbaceous perennial, then I'll have one of them !
8. Alpine
A what now ?
9. Bog/Aquatic
As above !
10. Herb
Also Rosemary, so I can have it on my roast lamb (of which there will be a plentiful supply on my island ;D)

Good thread, Andy! A lot of bloggers did something similar a couple of months ago (if anyone's interested, mine's here: theclockworkdodo.blogspot.com/2009/01/desert-island-plant-challenge.html and you can see everyone else's via the links from here: blog.shirlsgardenwatch.co.uk/2009/01/desert-island-plant-challenge.html) but I think this is harder, even though we were allowed fewer plants in the blog challenge, because you've specified types of plant Anyway, here's mine: 1) Tree - Amelanchier canadensis 2) Shrub - Cornus sanguinea midwinter fire 3) bedding plant - Um, I don't really grow traditional bedding plants, just hardy annuals - can I have some annual poppies - Papaver and Eschscholzia - for this one? 4) bulb - Narcissus - I don't need to specify which narcissus, do I? I want all of them (except for the p*nk ones, obviously)! 5) houseplant - no thanks - plants belong in the garden; books belong in the house (can I have another tree instead? ) 6) climber - Chaenomeles speciosa nivalis (OK, it's not a climber as such, but it can be trained as one). 7) herbaceous perennial - Poppies (am I allowed perennial Papavars and Meconopsis? Please?) 8) alpine - Pulsatilla vulgaris 9) bog/aquatic - Caltha palustris 10) herb - Rosmarinus
