Is "Earth Day" much of an event/occasion where you are? Each year here it seems to get a bit more play in the media with politicians and organizations making pronouncements or promoting "Earth Day" events. I was thinking of making a point of planting something like a new shrub to mark the day, preferably some kind of compact evergreen, but then I started wondering if I was allowing myself to get caught up in the "media event" hype. I mean, as gardeners, we do a lot of things all through the year, well, the garden season anyway, that would qualify as "Earth Day" thingies. Am I being overly cynical?

I think that's a definite no TT! I didn't even know it was Earth Day until I saw it on the Google masthead, and even now I don't know what it represents.

I guess it's supposed to be an international day that "honours" and pay respects to Mother Earth (like in doing a lot of environmentally supportive things). Wikipedia says it was started back in 1970 by a U.S. Senator, but as I said, it seems to me that it's only in the past few years that it's profile has ben growing. Here's what the Wiki has to say. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_Day
