I grew some for the first time last year, FA. I sowed the seeds indoors( not too late now) , planted them out and left them to it - and got a good crop, surprisingly! So yes, they are very easy and no trouble at all but they need a big area to roam about in.........I filled the wheelbarrow with the produce last year from only 3/4 plants......

I tried to grow a few last year FA, as 4P said they do need a big area to roam. Although I had a couple of really healthy looking plants that I grew from seed I didn't get anything edible as the weather was so crap. Loads of flowers and small fruit and I did have to nip the ends off when they started to roam further than allowed ;D I actually tried growing some up hill on trellis. I'm having another go this year but won't be sowing until mid may after my hols. This was as far as I got last year, although a few other members grew squash and had some amazing crops ;D Well it doesn't look like I'll be eating any squash from my garden I've had loads of lush foilage and flowers and quite a few squash but they have come to nothing. I was late starting and with the weather we've had I didn't really stand a chance. In an effort to help a couple along I cut back a lot of the growth a couple of weeks ago. These are 2 of them that have grown but they are getting the chop this week I'm afraid as they won't grow much more now Next year I WILL have squash to harvest.

I think I might have a bash. They can have a bit of the plot to themselves. In the usual FA way, I'll bung 'em in and see what happens ;D
Cheers FA x

Well I sowed 3 seeds a week or so ago and they have all germinated One is about an inch but the other two have just poked through the compo. Plan is to put 2 in one of the compost bins which is almost rotted down and let them hang down and the other maybe in a tub and try to grow it uphill again.

I've grown squashes and pumpkins in a pile of goat muck with some soil pockets this year. Despite a nightly soaking and lots of sunshine they are just sitting there.....courgettes sown at the same time and planted the same day in a raised bed near them, with the same watering times are romping away...so there's a little puzzle - any ideas why anyone, please?

Do you think they could be just putting all the goodness from the muck into growing root They should go like mad once they get their feet settled. Have you seen Jeans on her thread Planted 2 of my 3 in the top of the compost bin yesterday, they look a bit lost atm will plant the other in a raised bed and see how they go.

Jean's are a constant reproach to me.... ;D But not too much as virtually everything she grows seems to go like stink! They have been in the muck for a long time now really...maybe I'll just get one extra mammoth size one........

Dunno the answer to your query Myrt. Sorry. I never got round to doing any this year, mainly 'coz I don't have the room yet. They're definitely on my list for next year though.

If its any consolation my Butternut squash were very slow to germinate this year and have only recently been planted out ;D Some of the varieties that my brother had sown were very slow too - no explaination apart from each year is different. There is still enough time for them to grow especially if we get a fine Sept

I had a rootle about in the muck heap and , finally, some of them look like they are going to take off now...dunno which ones though as all the labels seem to have disappeared! I think the recent downpours have made the difference..

Mine haven't moved much either, yet. I must remember to give them a regular drink as the tardis compo bin they are in will drain quite quickly and it gets a good drop of sun on it too. Must plant No3 plant this week. I'm going to pop it in a tub and try to grow it uphill, we'll see what happens

Mine are growing like mad, they have now invaded the runner beans and are climbing through them But not one squash in sight!! It might be the last time I bother, as I have yet to get anything from them other than monster leaves!

I'm not playing the two in the compost bin got eaten despite putting pellets down. The third one which I planted in the tub has only just started to put on any sort of growth. I may as well compost it as I've not got a cat in hells chance Glad everyone else seems to be doing ok with them though, I'll give them one more try next year

I planted mine too late I think - they are just getting their first flowers - don't suppose there is enough warm weather left to get any squashes.

Still it's good to know how folks have done. The GW free ones are called Hunter and are ment to be ideal for the British Climate. I have a few seeds for next year if anyone wants them just pm me.
