Is it true what I've been told, that Agapanthus flower better the more potbound they are?

I got some seed when I was in Cornwall last July and planted them 15th March, got some nice seedlings now but wondered how long before they flower ... next year do you think or maybe two?

I have never grown them from seed but I have heard that with luck in the second year but it can also take up to 4 years to get them really going.

Will keep my fingers crossed that it's two and not four.

From what I have gathered they can grow fairly slowly but with the right mixture of water, food and tlc they seem to do fairly well, I think.
The winter is going to be the problem for me - I am not sure what to do with mine yet. It will probably have to go into the cellar and that will certainly prove whether this new variety is as good as they say because it killed my others off.
At the GC I was told to keep one outside and one in the cellar but at the price that I had to pay for one (15 Euro) I decided that I didn't need two!!

That seems expensive to me RF, the ones in my local GC's are from £4.99 to £7.99 ?

Yes it was expensive but it is supposedly better than sliced bread - it is the plant to have - Bluestorm.
Flowers all the time and doesn't mind having too much water or not getting pot bound and the roots aren't supposed to be so sensitive either. It doesn't even mind being put into a dark cellar - mmmh well we shall see this time next year, I reckon.

I've got loads of them ( they love it down here ) both in pots and in the garden. They love being rootbound. We had a bad winter ( for us ) with 3 frosts and several of the aggys went all mushy and brown. However, they have all come back strongly and now look as they usually do. I have never grown them from seed, but might give it a try - I like a challenge ;D

Auricula, the seed I used was from Trebah garden, supposed to be their own so I hope I've got cornish aggy's growing. They germinated well but took a month for them to show.

A few years ago when a friend of mine moved house she had a stone trough full of Agapanthus and they always flowered beautifully. We emptied the trough out so as to make moving the trough easier and we were both astonished at how pot bound they were, hardly any soil at all, it's a wonder they grew at all. We actually split them up and planted some in another trough and they didn't flower as well the following year. My large ones are in 2 small troughs and are sectioned off from some other plants I have in there with sheets of polystyrene to stop the roots spreading through the whole trough. I also have 2 small pots with a dwarf variety in them. Last year they were all very poor. Probably something I did or didn't do, not sure. I bought a new one last year, its a black one and that is in a pot too. Fingers crossed they all perform better this year

I bought mine from Wilkinsons but they took a couple of years before I got a flower and they look as if they have doubled in size now, I have them in a South facing front border. I actually thought I had lost them as they took so long to show.

I've been inspecting my troughs and on the surface I don't have any signs of growth at all I loath to poke about incase there are shoots and I break them. Never knew there were Evergreen Agapanthus and Deciduous Agapanthus www.agapanthus.org.uk/uk/public/index.php?id=18

So this new Agapanthus variety "Blue Storm seems to be the winner of the season as far as I am concerned. It was expensive at 15 Euro but when I think how "sensitive" Agapanthus can be and this is a dream - hope it is as easy to get over the winter. It was really pot bound when I bought it and I had to cut the pot off. Some roots had gone through the holes in the bottom and I ripped those off - a normal Agapanthus wouldn't have been happy about that. Then I put it into a tub that is probably at least 3 times bigger, if not more, again a normal Agapanthus wouldn't like that...and guess what - I have got 20 blooms and they are just starting to flower.!!! It looks as though the reports of this variety are true. RF

Agapanthus is very popular locally and they are all in flower at the moment. I pass a wonderful display of the dark blue variety every day - it fills the whole border in front of an old farm house - its amazing
