Hi Bazzyland and welcome to GWD! i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/smiley.gif Unfortunately it sounds as though your Clematis has something known as bacterial slime flux, and it is very possible that it won't recover. It seems that Clematis montana are particularly vulnerable to this disease. However, you could try spraying the plant with a copper based fungicide and also water around the roots with a similar mixture. If this has no effect you will have to dig up and destroy the plant and you will not be able to grow another clematis in the same location. Plocket is our Clematis expert so she may be able to offer an alternative solution next time she is online. i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/wink.gif

Hia and welcome! Mmm it certainly does sound like slime flux I'm afraid Bazzyland. Have a sniff of the "sap" and if it smells vile then it's most likely slime flux. It can occur if the plant gets damaged during a cold winter and unfortunately can mean the death of the plant. Cut your clematis back beneath the problem area if you can, and hopefully it will send out new stems and recover from the afliction. If it doesn't recover then you should dig out the plant and destroy it - don't put it in your compost bin! If you really do want to grow a clematis there again you should dig a big hole so that none of the bacteria is left, and refill it with fresh new soil. It is safer not to replant a clematis there though. This is the limited information I've put on my website (scroll down to the relevant section): www.plocket.co.uk/Info%20Pests.htmlI hope this helps, and wish you luck with your clematis

Mmm that's definately not Crystal Fountain Biggles. There are quite a few contenders but my first guesses would be Miss Bateman, James Mason, or Henryi as Maggy has suggested. Another thought is Fair Rosamond - mine has greenish streaks.

Biggles it's a beautiful Clem and very unusual, I've never seen it before but you're very lucky to have it I think.
