if you hear anything bang against your window after dark it is possibly a may bug. I'm very careful about going into the garden in the evening at this time of year. they seem to have spines on their legs and can stick to you. ooooh just the thought of it

We get loads here NO and this year there are in mass. I wrote about them here a few days ago... gardenworld.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=chat&action=display&thread=7478&page=1#239106They lay their eggs in the soil where the larve stay for 5 - 7 years according to the experts. I have never seen just one bug do any/much damage although I did watch one very carefully that was taking a stroll on one of my favourite roses yesterday. I would leave it be or pick him up and throw it in someone else's garden somewhere else....you know - a sort of grab and throw in one movement..... The worst thing is when you get them flying through the open bedroom window and come face to face with one on the pillow.... RF

If they're essentially baddies, why not just stomp on it, like I do with the lily beetles? I spent almost all day in the garden yesterday and picked off about a dozen of the little beasties; mostly off my fritillarias.

Aw, I don't think May bugs do much harm although I guess their grubs can eat roots in the soil. Leave the poor old bumbling things alone and duck when they're about to fly into you

One of the chickens had one last week, I'd never seen one before. Just now I was in the GH and heard something sort of scratching in the corner where I had some empty plant trays I stepped out the door a bit quick as I wasn't sure what it might be, got a cane and gently lifted stuff to see what it was. Inside one of the tray sections was one of these bugs, Cock Chaffer, May Bug, and apparently in Suffolk they're also known as 'Billy Witches'. Aren't they big ;D www.uksafari.com/cockchafer.htm

It's hot today Chuckles, and you just made me shiver! it made me dither and shiver NO, especially as I wasn't sure what was lurking. I'd have wet myself for sure if it had flown at me ;D
