If it brings in younger people, and they enjoy it, maybe they will grow into test match cricket as they get older. Younger people don't seem to have the same attention span of a generation ago. my sons used to happily go to Old Trafford with a picnic and watch a match.

I agree Barbara - it's horses for courses, and we have to start somewhere. Hope we do better today!!!

I saw a delayed broadcast on TV here one day last week (a pre-tournament match between West Indies and England) and I must say I was not impressed with the quality of the cricket. Not because West Indies played poorly (so what's new) but with the concept itself. It was very much like school yard cricket for me. I'm OK with the 50-overs matches. Thjere's quite a bit of quality there - not test match quality, mind, but close enough. This 20/20 bit is not a all impressive. The matches are available here on a pay per view channel/basis, but I'm certainly not going to pay the kind of money they're asking for to see that kind of cricket. The pre-tournament match I watched was a freebie/promotional effort by the channel. But that was it for me.

Twenty20 divides opinion here TT. The "purists" prefer the test matches and the 50-over game but for some of today's younger generation (with the attention span of a goldfish), Twenty20 is "wham bam thank you ma'am" and all over in about 3 hours. It has quite a big following but in my opinion, the greatest form of the game is the 5 day test match.

I never consider myself a purist, FA and I'm all for doing things to the game that will keep the younger generations interested, entertained and motivated to keep the game alive. But the question still would be, what are they getting interested in? And what will they be motivated/interested in learning to do? Is "Wham, Bam, off you go" cricket? Not for my money. And I don't think that in the long run that is the sort of thing that will keep the game alive. One-day/50 overs, Yes. 20/20, No.

Don't tell Dutchy about last nights result will you. Appalling isn't it. But then it isn't really proper cricket is it. Dutchy has no knowledge of what you lot are on about. I think I am best off by sticking to a permanent blond moment on this ;D Noticed what? erm no don't tell ... blond for ever....

Cricket, Dutchy, Holland beat England at it, that wasn't supposed to happen.

But don't worry about it as Holland are now out of the competition

;D Ah good You got me worried about having to go and see another sport on TV. Formula 1 and Jenson Button that is more like it. (been a fan of Button for 5 years and this year he has gone on a winning spree )

I played cricket for years until I retired due to a slipped disc.
My grandsons are playing now and are very promising - the oldest plays for Hertfordshire under 11's.
I have got an international 100 - against Wales over 50's at Sophia Gardens.
TT - I played many years ago against Andy Roberts cousin Edison. He was quite quick enough thanks.

I understand Michael Vaughan is to retire from first class cricket. Such a shame that someone who is already the most successful England captain ever in terms of test matches won and who captained the first successful ashes team in 18 years has had such trouble with his persistent knee injuries. He could have gone on to be one of the all time greats of the game.
Still, not long to go now 'til the Ashes series starts again. We owe them one big style after the 5-0 drubbing in Australia last time.

I was going reasonably well until Freddie & Prior got themselves out All in all, I think it was a reasonable day for England but probably just shaded by the Aussies getting 7 wickets down. FA x
