I am trying to get some stems to root in water (can just see the first signs of roots forming) - has anyone grown this?
How deep should the stems be planted into the compost when they have decent roots on them?
Any help appreciated.
x Tig

Just re-reading the lemongrass posts in 'which herbs' hasn't left me any the wiser... I was expecting it to overwinter in the PT, but my pots of it all died. At least, I think they've died - together with the 'overwinter chillies', I water them every day in triumph-over-experience-going-through-the-motions, expecting to see a spark any time now...
So, culinary forms may be an annual, Tig - if you do get it away, put some in the freezer, in case.
OM.

I knew I had read something about it on here RF, although my 'search' revealed nothing (again!) Think you should stop watering them OM - according to my 'research' they go dormant in winter and watering can rot the roots We shall see how I get on ... x Tig

I have grown some from seed this year...OM and Tig...I have seed left you know...... Kind of you Cheery, but I'll pass on the grass, thank you. If you have any left come winter, I found it turned brown at the first frosts, even under cover. So, either keep a pot of it inside the house - I see no reason why it shouldn't overwinter 'green' like normal grass if encouraged - or bear in mind Tig's rootrot peril. Quite how you decide when to stop watering and when to start may be a problem though. OM.

I have two big terracotta pots of 3 year old lemon grass grown from rooting in water, the only problem is I cannot bear to dig up the shoots to use them. I now have some more rooting, and hopefully I wont become so attached to this lot.

I know what you mean - I haven't been able to take any off mine for cooking with, even though it has formed quite a large clump now It is quite a nice 'grass' though x Tig

There was a really good little programme about Lemon grass on Radio 4 this lunchtime. I happened to be nipping down the village so heard a bit of it - it was very informative. And the recipes by this man living in Thailand sounded really delicious..............

How sweet Cheery, my Birman cat never gave it a second look! Are those what have grown for you from seed? Look pretty good if they are! OM you are a tad late getting started - it will soon be time to let them go into a dormant state for the winter if my research was correct. I have put mine in the mini-growhouse and vowed to stop watering it x Tig
