I'm interested to know people's preference. When using pots for your seeds and potting on, do you prefer round pots or square ones?
Personally, I prefer square ones, as they fit into rows better (and you can usually fit more into the space you have). ;D

For me it is both - if I have things like begonias to plant I do them in square pots so that I get more in a tray.
If I have bushier things - geranium cuttings etc that are already a bit on the large size I tend to use a round one to give them a little more room.
I do tend to have more square pots on the go though.

I use whatever I have. I do tend to use round pots simply so I can get them in plant trays to transport. And because I get lots given to me they tend to be ex GC round ones too....

I am the same 4Pygmies, I use the ex Garden Centre ones and the plant trays that fit. I just wish all plant trays were the same.

I like square ones for my seedlings because I can get more of them in the gravel trays, but like others I have lots of round ones from 'purchases' so they get used for cuttings and growing on.

I have just discovered square pots - I ordered 50 very cheaply off Ebay. They fit together better in trays and in the greenhouse. Will be buying more.

I tend to use both round and square, if I only want to sow a few seeds then I use round ones but other wise I use the square ones. I tend to prick seedlings into round pots then its easier to transport to the garden and just dig a hole and put the hole thing in.

I like square pots best because of the way they fit together but most of my pots are round and I'm always running out of square ones.

Round ones - I have loads of 7cm ones, then progressively less of eac size as they go up 9cms,12cms 1litre and 2litre ones. Every year I'm ruthless and throw excess ones away ( I wish they could be recycled but I've tried and no one wants them )

I use both although I really like the soft rubber-like 3 inch round ones from Wilkos, which needless to say they don't have any more. You can really cram those into any gaps. The larger pots are mostly of the round variety and virtually all ex GC stock since we never throw old pots away!

I have both and use whatever is spare at the time. the only pots I'm not too fussed about are the peat pots, they seem to dry out quickly and get mould growing on them, so I'll throw the rest out

I have and use both round and square pots. I use the freebie round and square GC trays too. Square pots do fit better in seed trays though. When I pot on I'm a bugga for having to use all same type of pot, terracota coloured round pots and black ones have to be seperate ;D and even the terracota ones that have a black rim, sad aren't I ;D I like those GC trays that have a raised bit inside and a hole on the raised bit, great for watering stuff and not over doing it, hope that makes sense

It does make sense ;D I too use old GC pots and at times I buy some but those are the square ones and the GC are round and like Pip I would be happy if plant trays could be more similar. But then the GC pots are also all different sizes. For transport and space in the CF the squares are best fitting and easiest but for the plants I think there is no difference. I just long for the time when all are out in the garden and I can begin reclaiming the space they occupy for what it was meant for ;D

Actually the shape of the pot is less important than the depth. You should always use a pot which is deeper than the length of roots of the plant you are putting in it. That way the roots may be put in so that they are downward pointing and not curled up, thus avoiding a check to its growth while the roots re-orient themselves.

I use whatever I've got but personally I prefer square pots because they stand next to each other very neatly.

Thats a good point OB and I do use deeper pots when potting on. The shape and colour thing with me is for when I have groups of young plants together, I'm not good at doing labels so a group of same shape same colour pot must be what it says on the one thats labelled if you get my drift ;D

I've got lots of really good square ones that fit 15 to a seed tray i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/smiley.gif
