I can't remember whether I have asked this before, but does anyone use bokashi bins?
I have been putting all of our household waste into bokashi bins for the past few months. When full and fermented for a couple of weeks the contents then go into the compost bin.
Today I dug out the first bucketful of compost. The only word for it is WOW!!! - black, moist, crumbly, and absolutely ALIVE with red brambling worms - wonderful. I would certainly recommend using bokashi bins for composting

I've looked it up online and think it's a fantastic thing to do. I'd be really keen to give it a try. :)But tell me, would any airtight bucket not do if it was a suitable size? I can't think why it would'nt be an alternative, provided you could order the bran on it's own which I think you can. What do you think?

Oh good! I'm trying to persuade a friend of mine to use a Bokashi bin but I haven't any experience of them personally. I really pleased to hear that you like them DrBill, now I can tell her that you really rate them. I always have thought they sounded brilliant..... They seem quite expensive initially but they are available on ebay at a more affordable price...as is the bran etc needed for them if anyone fancies a go..

Thanks for that info 4P. I'll wait and see what folk think about using a bucket with an airtight lid which I already have before I buy anything.

The bokashi buckets have a tap on the bottom to drain off the "juice" which forms during the fermentation process. I can't think of any way to do this with an ordinary bucket. The juice can either be diluted and used as a plant food, or poured down the drain. The bokashi organisms somehow helps to sanitise the drain (a bit like Yakult sanitising your gut I suppose)
