i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/smiley.gif I see a lot of new names since I "mislaid" this site a year or two ago. Anyone still from France - or Europe? I moved last year from my lovely maturing garden to a completely blank page - one cherry tree - with delicious cherries that I am trying to stop the birds stripping - and one sorrel plant. I find it quite strange that the previous owners had not planted ANY trees, bushes, perennials or anything, except a wide dull area of gravel. Apparently the old man had a wonderful potager - or kitchen garden, so the soil is very good - as the weeds are finding. Any suggestions for rapid colour and growth. I have planted a lot of different species of buddleia around the - very boring - wire fence and plan to have raised beds on the gravel interspersed with trees to give some height and width. It faces south and can get very hot and dry - although, with the rain we have had here (too) recently, that seems a joke. Glad to be back

Welcome back from me too, you must have been here before I arrived mid-summer 2007?
Sounds like an interesting project you have going, perhaps one of the raised beds could be used for herbs?
I have 'hot/dry' conditions in the front garden, and the soil is not very good either. Calendula, candy tuft and poppies seem to grow OK and self seed. I have several cordylines, and I have planted phlomis, eryngiums, asiatic lilies, hesperaloe parviflora, iris, geums, beschoneria yuccanoides, and loads of tulips for colour in spring.
Look forward to seeing some photos of your garden as it develops.
x Tig

I remember Scottishsandra being in France, I am in the Netherlands. As for people not planting trees or shrubs, strange indeed. Maybe your new garden is on a slope that gets blasted by the Mistral in Autumn? That wet storm can get so bad that it blows over and washes away quite a lot of trees shrubs and soil in the south of France. Maybe hence the no work gravel? Greening up your plot depends on where you are then. Cheers and welcome back Dutchy

Excuse the delay in replying but thanks for all your welcomes. Dutchy - I live in the Loire Valley, so weather not extreme. my garden is almost completely flat. We do get wind, but nothing like the Mistral, fortunately. Tig - thanks for your suggestions - sound like some possibilities. I remember having problems trying to post photos. Must look into how to do it again. Fortunately I can look out of my window while I am at the pc and see all the birds who are finding I am a good source of food. There are a couple of bushy trees the other side of the fence that they can fly into easily for safety.
