It's in a pot under the kitchen window, I bought it about a year ago. It has never flowered, and the leaves look like they have rust and are dropping off, any ideas what's wrong please.

I've read in several books that honeysuckles don't like being in pots Barbara. They are prone to mildew if pot grown. They like a deep cool root run. Mine started life last year in a pot and this year it is in semi shade in the ground and seems to be much healthier.

Thanks Jas, it's there to hide an ugly wall, I suppose I'll have to move it, as I don't want to kill it off.

Mine looked so woeful last year, it looks like a different plant this year. I wonder just how big a pot they need to be happy (if they can manage a pot at all).
Is there anyone on here who has grown one successfully in a pot?

I did one once in a 60 litre tub - only lasted 2 years - they really do not like tub life I am afraid...well certainly not the tub I offered them anyway.

I've tried them in tubs Barbara and they don't do as well as if in the ground. One I have that is just sort of ok is in a pot thats about 16-18" deep, it's not in the best position really either and doesn't get that much sun tbo and I guess it's been in the pot for 3 years now. Growth is mainly at the top and it has flowered this year so I'm pleased, it has a Black Prince Clem in the same pot with it. I do have to water and feed them regularly

Welcome to GWD wendya! There may be smaller, less vigorous Honeysuckles that are suitable for a pot and someone else may know of one but there are probably lots of other climbers you could grow. There are lots of clematises that don't grow too big but you may be after something that will smell nice.

Thank you Jasmine, I have always loved honey suckles for their fragrance reminds me of my old Nanna's garden. if anyone knows any species that would do ok in a big pot let me know, as im rather determined to try it I am afraid. But then again i don't know many other climbers im not an expert at all, this is why i am here to try to gather a bit of knowledge. so any advise will be very welcome, thank you

Welcome to GWD wendya and actually I am also looking for a Honeysuckle that would fit into a large pot for the terrace. I have tried before and they are just too large but these days there seem to be so many varieties of plants and veg for patio/balcony/terrace that I am in hope that I can find one...!! As Jasmine says there are some wonderful Clematis that do well in tubs but they are not smelly. There are sweetpeas of course and are a must for me each year... RF

I am now thinking of planting a honey suckle down stairs in the forecourt as i have decided to take over the containers, as no one looks after them, and they are perfect for a honesysuckle as next to a high fence, so it could climb up, I have been sorting these containers out all week, cutting back and simply cleaning up a bit as containers has been left 3 years to grown on its own without any tending i am unsure of the tall flowers planted in it, they are a wild looking variety, but it looks so much better now and i have turned the soil etc and hopefully soon can buy a honeysuckle to go in this container, its very large too maybe 20 ft x 5f When is the best time to plant a baby honeysuckle please anyone, as I have seen ones on Amazon saying they can be planted now, but im doubtful with the frost.
