Has anyone successfully grown a crop of peppers from seeds saved from a shop bought fruit?
It's just that the seeds cut out of a bell pepper this lunchtime are brown as opposed to the usual green and look as though they would dry sufficiently to be saved for future use.
I know it works with tomato pips, but how about peppers?

Never done it myself but I knew someone, years ago, who grew all his peppers that way. May be worth a try.

I do Spru - have done for a couple of years now - just a couple of plants, - the rest I buy named seeds.
The only thing is that you don't know if it is a F1 variety so you could get something else but that's the fun of the game, I think. I've got seeds from a long thin sweet pepper this year - can't wait to see if that is what I really get.

I always do Spru ... I have some growing from long sweet red Italian Romino's and some jalapinos This year I took mine fresh and sowed straight away whilst the seed was white, 100% germination! I have dried them in previous years and they worked just as well. Dried them on kitchen towel and stored them in it, easy to write what they are on it. x Tig

I've done them from shop bought seeds and been successful too and my seeds were white

Yes on closer examination my seed was white too. The brown bits that looked like seeds turned out to be empty seed cases. I have around 30 drying in a plant saucer on the bedroom windowsill. It's remembering to do something with them next year that's going to be the problem. i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/grin.gif

I'm sure someone sows their peppers in the autumn Spruance. Can't remember who but they get an early and good harvest. The chili peppers which I'm currently growing are all from saved supermarket seeds. The bell peppers are bought. I'll let you know how they crop.

Yes I have seen the overwintered peppers too LG but as our GHs are unheated that would mean starting in the house which isn't ideal at that time of year. I've been very good with the saved seed, all dried nicely and carefully packeted, labelled and placed in my seed box. So that's the difficult part sorted, now I just need a memo for next February. i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/wink.gif

Hi Spruance and LG,
I tried some peppers last year in 3 inch pots which I sowed on the 3rd August last year and just left on the spare room ( north facing) windowsill with the heating in the room off but the door ajar. I now have Romano and Fennix peppers about 3 to 4 inches long on these plants, the Jan sown plants are about the same height now but just starting to flower. I'll get some photos tonight.
An experiment I think I will try again this year with some more varieties of peppers and also some chillies.

Ah it was you Mowhay, I knew someone had sown some at the end of the summer. Thanks for letting us know. I've gone and had a look at mine and you know none of my supermarket saved seeds have a flower on them. Nice tall plants one of them is at least 3 foot tall but not even a sign of a bud. The one and only that I have outside, in a sheltered pot and I don't know if it's a chillie or a pepper has lots of flowers so I'm guessing it's a pepper. I wonder if the saved supermarket ones are sterile.

Don't know LG but the others who have posted seem to have had a crop in previous years. My Jan sown ones are about two feet tall (T&M seeds) and just started to flower so I am "misting" them now.
How about feeding with tomato food to see if it starts them flowering?
