This is the text of an email I received recently. There are a couple of points I would make about it. Firstly, I have no idea if this is for real. I can't imagine what someone would get out of making it up (unless they are a from a rival coffee chain or something) but I have been able to verify that the claim about charging for water near the World Trade Centre is true. Secondly, I make no comment about the rights or wrongs of it, I just thought I would let you read it and make your own mind up about it.
"Recently, British Royal Marines in Iraq wrote to Starbucks because they wanted to let them know how much they liked their coffees, and to request that they send some of it to the troops there.
Starbucks replied, telling the Royal Marines thank you for their support of their business, but that Starbucks does not support the war, nor anyone in it, and that they would not send the troops their brand of coffee.
So as not to offend Starbucks, maybe we should support them by NOT buying any of their products!
I feel we should get this out in the open. I know this war might not be very popular with some folks, but that doesn't mean we don't support the boys on the ground, fighting street-to-street and, house-to-house.
If you feel the same as I do then pass this along.
Thanks very much for your support. I know you'll all be there again when I deploy once more.
Sgt. Howard Wright, 1 Platoon, Recon Company, Royal Marines PLEASE DON'T DELETE THIS... PLEASE PASS TO EVERYONE ON YOUR E- MAIL LIST, IN MEMORY OF ALL THE TROOPS WHO HAVE BEEN WOUNDED, LOST LIMBS AND EVEN DIED, SO THAT WE MAY HAVE THE RIGHT TO CHOOSE ! Also, don't forget that when the Twin Trade Towers were hit, the fire fighters and rescue workers went to Starbucks because it was close by for water for the survivors and workers, and Starbucks CHARGED THEM!!! AN ADDED NOTE TO THIS: STARBUCKS HAD STORES ON SEVERAL MILITARY BASES IN THE UNITED STATES. THEY ARE NOW BEING REMOVED BECAUSE OF THIS. There are 227 Starbucks stores across the UK , and there's no doubt that our soldiers would get the same response from this company, so let us do our bit and boycott Starbucks to show them how despicable their actions are."

IF that's true, it's a disgraceful way to treat forces personnel.

I just find this so hard to believe (I'm not disagreeing with you FA) but the USA is a nation that is sooo proud of its armed forces and Starbucks must be a US company isn't it? At Disney shows all the forces folk have to stand up before they start so they can receive applause from the audience. That might not be the best example of their feelings but it is one I have actually seen myself.

Fortunately this is yet another of those stories that gets around via a modern version of Chinese Whispers, and has no bearing on reality. See following statement from Starbucks and clarification from 'Sgt Wright'. urbanlegends.about.com/library/bl_starbucks_statement.htmIt's always best to check these things out before jumping to conclusions. [NB: One of the best places to look for spoof stories is the Snopes website... www.snopes.com/politics/military/starbucks.asp and indeed it turns out that variations of this particular story have been around since 2004.]

Leaving the rights and wrongs of the war aside, and the truth or untruth of Starbucks' attitude, I have never been in a Starbucks. This is because my one and only attempt to buy a cup of coffee in a similar establishment was a disaster due to my having absolutely no idea what to ask for. Latte, skinny, double shots, are all foreign language to me, let alone the various sizes i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/rolleyes.gif I only wanted a cup of something hot, wet, and coffee flavoured, preferably at a reasonable price. I only drink instant at home because that is what I prefer. I can happily drink that without sugar, whereas some of the "real" stuff has me reaching for the sugar sachet i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/sad.gif

Ah NO, you probably need to ask for a single shot latte. Being slightly fond of coffee (as in don't speak to me in the morning until you've ascertained that I've had some for your own safety!), I do like it strong. My OH on the other hand is more like you and would really prefer a spoonful of Nescafe. He has this sussed now and always asks for a single shot. If you don't like it made with all milk, ask for an Americano. Skip the size thing - I always ask for a large and they know what you mean. One thing I haven't yet figured out (and someone will know) is what a wet coffee is! A friend swears he was standing behind someone who asked for a wet coffee!

Thank you Blod A single shot Americano - must remember that! (I bet it still costs a small fortune though!)
