I know that this year is not over yet, but is anyone having any thoughts on fruit/veg they might grow next year, or am I just a bit potty? ;D
As I now have the allotment, I am planning (about half of it for fruit and half for veg):
- Strawberries
- Redcurrants (and possibly whitecurrant)
- Plum*
- Pear*
- Beetroot (has done fantastically well this year. Many thanks again Snowowl for the seed)
- Purple sprouting broccoli
- Broccoli (possibily Romanesco again if it does well this year)
- Onions (red and white)
- Florence fennel (has grown well this year for the first time)
- Courgettes
- Squash (winter and summer)
- Potatoes (salad and maincrop)
- Sweet potatoes (never tried before)*
- Carrots
- Asparagus
- Broad beans
- Runner beans
- Leeks
- Parsnips* (they did nothing this year, but will give them another chance)
*If anyone has any tips for growing please let me know.
My broad beans weren't really that great this year, partly because the black fly seemed to make a beeline for mine and left those on the other plots well alone. Does anyone know a way to put them off or is there a particular variety they don't go for? I also discovered that I seem to have pea/bean weevils on the plot, which nibbled the leaves.
I've also decided that my fig tree that I have in a pot in the garden, will be put on the allotment as well. I have some 10 litre plastic pots, and I will plant it up in one of those and then sink it in the ground.
