I've recently found out that pretty much all teletext is going to be disappearing from January 2010. I can't believe it. I'm a hopeless text addict and I'm absolutely gutted that it's going. I spend more time trawling the text than I do watching the puerile drivel and moronic dross that passes for tv these days. As far as I'm aware, Ceefax (the BBC's teletext service) is continuing but ITV text is so far superior, especially with the viewer interaction in the form of letters & texts. It's all down to money again. Apparently teletext makes a loss and there is no way of turning it into a profit maker so the company that owns and maintains it is simply going to close it down. The b@st*rds I understand ALL analogue text is going from 2010 too. I'm distraught and I know Auricula will be too Any other hopeless teletext addicts out there ? FA x

Yes I am a big fan of teletext too FA. It was bad enough when Oracle lost the franchise in 1989 but at least that wasn't the end of the service.
Teletext as broadcast on ITV is owned by Daily Mail and General Trust and as I understand it, it is indeed a question of economics. I don't however accept the notion that the demise of teletext is down to the Internet. I spend a great deal of time (perhaps too much) online but I still use teletext when I am watching TV. Mainly I tend to look at the news or sports sections and also the local news as some of the stories don't always make it to the web equivalent.
ITV's teletext has been getting progressively worse over recent months so I suppose this is part of the wind down. Still the BBC's Ceefax is very useful especially the red button version so it's not all bad.

I did once have a colleague who used some of his annual leave to follow the chess world championship on ceefax.
That addict enough for you? ;D

You're right Andy - I'm gutted!!!!!!!!!!!! We've actually had our analogue switched off in our area and the digital teletext/ceefax has loads of bits missing ( including the interactive correspondence). When ITV text goes completely I don't know what I'll do........I might even have to talk to OH more Seriously though, you'd think they could do something - although as Teletext is owned by the Daily Mail, I suppose we can't expect anything alse from the mercanary ba****ds!!! I'll especally miss the biased sports texts from teletext ( Khan is one of my faves!) ;D

Actually I've started reading the BBC sport messageboards so that when all the text goes, I'll probably look at them instead.
I still think it's a bloody disgrace though.
