I am looking for some exotic looking, flowering shrubs to plant in a south facing border. They need to quickly grow to about 3 to 4 ft high, and about 2ft wide and not be too dense as they need to provide a partial screen to stop our conservatory windows being in full view of the road. Any ideas please ?

It can grow into a thug as it does get big and as far as I remember before having had to yank it out it does flower for long. How about a Hibiscus syriacus they are tough and have big houseplant like flowers from white to pink and purple ( Blue Bird is a nice purple one) Are you in a mild climate in the sunny west? Calistemon rigidus is pretty exotic

Fatsia would get my vote as would several of the smaller Phormiums such as "Bronze Baby"

I've just got the new Parkers catalogue ;D
Kolkwitzia amabilis Pink Cloud (beauty bush) looks quite nice, and it can be pruned.

The downside is that lots of bulbs ( especially alliums, tulips and fritillaria crown imperials ) rot

Good idea, but they would have to be lifted as they rot off ortherwise
