Going to be looking for a greenhouse soon. I'm tempted with the polycarb ones...they're cheaper and easier than glass and lighter.
Any pros and cons over glass ?
Many thanks
Andy

Andy I have had my poly one for three years now, I got poly because of my two granddaughters and the two young boys next door and their footballs but mainly for it being child-safe. I would recommend putting as many "W" clips on the sheets as possible as they do flex in the strong winds and I have lost two before but as long as you accept this they are fine. Try to seal the ends of the sheets to stop dampness and green algae between the skins of the sheets too. Hope this helps?

I have a poly as well and the best pro that i can think of is that I havn't broke any panes. I've tripped up a few times and landed against a panel , if it had been glass I hate to think what might have happened

I've always had glass - toughened in the past, ordinary glass now. You definitely have to be careful when pushing things under benches etc. I was told that glass lets more light in, but I don't know.I think it's a case of whatever suits your lifestyle best. I do agree with Mowhay though, make sure you have lots of fixings and seal the ends.We have polycarb sheets as a roof to our pergola and the sealed ends are a must.

I have 3mm horticultural sheet glass in both greenhouses but that is how they came in the first place. Touch wood, the only breakage so far has been transit damage to the door of the first one in 1996. Alton paid for a local glazier to replace it on a like for like basis.
As I understand it, glass does let more light in but polycarbonate is perhaps the best option when children are likely to be playing around the GH.

Andy, I hope you don't mind if I just ask a question on your thread. Mowhay and Auricula, what did you seal your poly carb sheets with please?

No worrys Jas....you could brobably use cheap bathroom sealant. As long as it withstands wet and cold, i don't think it matters.

Thanks for that Andy. I was just going to get a poly greenhouse in spring (too many ball games in our garden for glass) - didn't think about things that might need doing besides just getting it put together.

Sorry Jas, missed this thread. The sheets came with sealant strips - they fit over the ends of the sheets.

Thanks Auricula - that's quite handy if the stuff to do it with comes with the greenhouse.
