I had to share this whopper my neighbour has given me this morning!! It is a cooker of some kind, there is another one still on the tree which is half this size again! Anyone got an idea what variety it could be? x Tig

Could it be a Jonagold. They're big apples.

Biggest I know is the Howgate Wonder... my memory of it is that it's duller than yours (do you polish 'em Tig?) but apples do vary a lot, even from the same tree. It's certainly a whopper.

Thanks for that suggestion OM, I have been slowly working my way through the pictures of apples on here .. web.ukonline.co.uk/suttonelms/apple5.htmlin the hope of finding it. I didn't polish it (I don't do polishing these days ) but it did get a wipe with a damp cloth x Tig

You should see the one that's still on the tree, it is half as big again as the one I had. It is a grafted 'shrub' rather than a tree really, only about 6' tall. It doesn't look sturdy enough to bear apples of this size, but she tells me it had six on last year. They are well secured, hangin on by really thick stalks (I'll get a piccie if it is still there on Friday x Tig
