My avatar is a rose called 'Bright Future', hence my signature: I believe in a bright future. That has been sorely tested recently, but thankfully things have turned out all right. My brother was hit by a car last Monday night whilst out walking. He has been in a coma until today (Saturday), but has now opened his eyes and been talking to the nurses. Its a great relief. He hasn't gotten away scot free though: two broken cheek bones, three broken ribs, damage to his lungs and spleen, a chipped bone in his ankle and the skin scraped from all the toes on his left foot. No wonder he didn't want to wake up. He's on the mend though, and I still believe in a bright future. i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/cool.gif

Oh Rony I'm so glad he's out of his coma, and hopefully on the mend, I bet he aches everywhere though.

How dreadful for him Ron! And for his family, what a worrying time you must have had.
Pleased to hear he has come out of his coma, hope he is a strong chap and soon on the road to recovery!
Did the driver own up? What a nightmare ...

I don't know what happened to the driver - his mind, that is. At first, we thought the accident had occured on a particular bit of the local Stafford road. That is where the police found the driver of the car, sitting behind the wheel, seemingly in shock. After they had been in touch with the hospital though, they discovered it had happened a couple of hundred yards further back. The driver had carried on that far before he stopped, and then just sat there. It was another walker who found my brother and got the ambulance. But for that wonderful person, the outcome might have been very different.

Rony, only just seen your thread. What an awful thing to happen. Thank goodness your Brother is out of the coma now, what a time you and your family must have had. It will be a long slow road to recovery from the sounds of things but at least he's going in the right direction now. I'm not surprised the driver was in shock but thank goodness someone happened along and got things moving. Do you know who it was, the person who found your Brother and rang the emergency services? How absolutely awful it must have been for you all. Big hugs

Thanks, Ladygardener. I don't yet know who rang for the ambulance. The police have said they will be in touch but they are taking their time. You are right, it will be a slow recovery. He has been sitting up in bed recently, but he still isn't fully conscious yet. Its as if he was sedated, he comes out of it now and then but drifts back again. With his injuries, that possibly is a good thing. It will be great to see him come fully round but it may take a while. I really appreciate the kind thoughts and good wishes expressed on this thread. Thank you all.

William is out of intensive care now and onto a general ward. He is still not fully conscious but is getting there. The sad thing is he keeps asking for water but they can't give it him in case he chokes. All they can do is swab his mouth. He will be going to a different hospital to convalesce in about a week. He can't yet move one side of his body, the side which took the impact. They say this should improve over time.

What an awful thing to happen RM. I'm glad to hear that he's on the mend though. It may be a long process but it could have been so much worse.
Sending you and your brother my very best wishes.

Thank you FA, and you're right of course. It could have been much worse, and we feared it was at first. Things do look better. RM

William is still improving. I visited today and he was a little 'out of it' to begin with but soon perked up. He was able to hold a meaningful conversation, although he tired quite quickly. The left side of his body, that wasn't working, has improved. The nurses had him walking a few feet, putting his weight on the 'bad' side, and he managed well. The only down side is that he may lose the sight of one eye. That may not be ideal, but it is something he can learn to live with.

Oh dear Rony. Good to hear your brother is on the mend though. What a shock. I suppose he is going into some sort of physio rehab or what ever it is called in English? Where you learn to use all your muscles and the likes again.

Oh this is awful Rony - William must have been hit with some force - the driver must be in bits too - dont suppose your brother can tell you what happened yet
I know a lot of the roads around Stafford - the one past Keele Uni is a dreadfully busy one and the one going into Newcastle with all those roundabouts a nightmare

jennywren and Ladygardener- no, we don't know what happened and possibly never will. William may not remember and there were no witnesses. I'm extra careful regarding the roads now. Thanks both, for your thoughts. There isn't much change now, he's still a bit confused at times. It will be a while, but he should get there.

I'm stressed out, I'm afraid. Not in a good mood at all.
This accident is not the first bad luck William has had in the last couple of years. He was diagnosed with a brain tumour (Glioblastoma) for which he had two operations, radiotherapy and chemotherapy. We thought he was over it, but the head trauma he suffered seems to have brought it back again.
When I visit, he seems better each time, just a little bit of short term memory loss. Because of the accident though, the consultant says he dare not operate. He has said William is terminally ill.
We haven't told him yet. It might set him back in his recovery from the accident. lets hope we can get him home for some of the time he has left with us.
There is one slight hope. I have emailed the Liverpool Head and neck cancer Centre. They are the best in the country with this kind of thing. I've said I want a second opinion and asked if they will look at his case.
I wasn't sure about sharing this with you, but you have all been so supportive and generous with your good wishes that I felt I should.

Oh Rony that is terribly sad news. Perhaps the Liverpool Cancer Centre will be able to offer some help or advice. What a wise idea to approach them.

This is very sad news indeed Rony what a burden you all have to carry. All I can say is my heart goes out to you and your family and I hope you get good support as and when you all need it. Perhaps, as you say the Liverpool hospital will be able to do something.
