I've never thought about trying cucumbers from saved seed. I'm always quite surprised at the cost of cucumber seed though so it is a brilliant idea. ;D
PM sent. ;D

Usually Cucumbers do not set seed as they are used unfertilised or from all female plants. If you have allowed them to be fertilised then the seed should be ok.

I'm not sure on that one OB but there was lots of seed inside it so it will be fun seeing what happens. Anyone else want a go I still have some seeds left.

if they're F1 varieties I don't think that they'll be fertile...I read that somewhere...could be wrong..... ;D

This tip may help....
In summer I was at our favourite GC, actually Missy was on holiday with us, and Olaf of "Mystery Rose" fame closed the place for lunch and invited us behind the scenes to his private garden - an honour indeed - think it was only because Missy was with us actually......
Anyway he was trialling some tomatoes for a firm and he always does them outside - the rougher the treatment, the better. We were allowed to try a couple and I am going to get one of them in 2010 - it was a tomato and a half ...so seeds available from me end of next year.
Anyway, I digress....we were chatting and he was saying that his Mum had already got some seeds from the ones that were necessary and I asked about F1's. He said that "yes, it is true that F1's don't always come true but with things like peppers/chillies/cucumbers and tomatoes if the seeds from the first fruit were taken, there was over a 90-95% chance that the seeds would be true"!! He felt that actually there could be a 99% chance but obviously one never knew.
I reckon it is worth a try!!!

I've not been around for a while but I tried growing cucs from saved seed last year with not much luck.
Looking at OB's post though they might not have been fertilised.

I've saved seed before from a plant I was given, a bush cuc which had lovely small fruit, didn't have much luck with it though. I did get some germination and flowers and a few fruit but they never got to the stage where they were edable, maybe it was just a bad growing year. Just found this about saving seeds, scroll right to the bottom www.realseeds.co.uk/cucumbers.html
