As I understand it Limewire is not a legal site as far as copyright law is concerned, and as a note of caution Proboards doesn't condone open discussion of how it might be possible to conduct 'illegal' downloads.
That said, as FA has recently posted, Spotify is a good way to listen to complete music tracks with the option then to buy them and Last.FM works similarly. Imeem also allows you to play 30 second segments of tracks with the option of a download link.
Offhand I can't think of any site that allows the legal free download of the likes of chart music.

I use Tesco which is quite easy to use, I don't use it very often and do have to think about it a bit You do only get a 30 second preview and most tracks are about 67p. Just had a look and they are doing some for 29p www.tescoentertainment.com/store/browse/mp3/Having just tried to have a look at Spotify and it says ........... "We also have a waiting list for Spotify Free, but the interest in Spotify has been so huge that it may take a long time before we can send you an invite. We recommend that you to either get premium or ask a friend for an invite" Will have a peek at Last.fm then ;D

Spruance and Chuckles, thanks for your replies. Spruance, with regard to your comment "Proboards doesn't condone open discussion of how it might be possible to conduct 'illegal' downloads." Perhaps you misunderstood me but I thought I made it perfectly clear I was looking for legal sites. Having said that I was completly unaware that any downloading was illegal. Chuckles looks like Spotify is a busy site then. Will check out Last. FM thanks. ;D

I've spent quite a bit of time between last night and now checking out several sites including the ones mentioned above. Thanks very much for your help and advice. I've got some good sites now. I've also found the Classic FM shop online and I think this is a good site for what I'm looking for. ;D

Since Imeem 'disappeared' thanks to MySpace Music (thanks a lot MySpace ) I have found a very useful alternative in the form of Grooveshark:- listen.grooveshark.comThe idea is similar to Imeem in that you can create your own online playlist and there also links to the Amazon and iTunes download sites. Unlike Imeem though you do not need to be a member to play music and you can listen to whole tracks. I am currently listening to a selection of Christmas music.
