blc , Rosefriend , The bottom bowl has about 16" diameter which should be okay for the birds. Wondering though if it should be raised off the ground ...? Just been thinking about it Ron , and it is already on a pedestal isn't it. On the other hand the cats would have easy prey - again though my bird baths are on the ground and nothing has ever happened. They are in the open though and not surrounded by bushy plants that a cat could hide... I saw the bird link - my birds fly up to the fencing and dry off there - very often by the look of the sh** marks on the ground!! Think I'll try it on the ground and see what happens. There are a few cats around (wouldn't have it any other way as they keep the rabbits away), if the birds don't use it I'll raise it up. Sounds like plants near the fence can look forward to plenty of fertiliser

Essential in our climate I think, to have battery back up. I couldn't find one suitable so have opted for the next best thing, and will adapt it if necessary. Have read taht it's better to leave off the spray nozzle and have the water bubbling rather than spraying as it doesn't then put off the birds. Also might reduce flow of water cascading down by blocking bottom half of each outlet with a pebble. Not cheap but reasonable as it should last. www.waterfeatures2go.co.uk/solar-granite-cascading-bowls-water-feature-0639767160599.htmlI've looked at that type of style fountain as well, but as you say, kind of pricey. On that page, top right there is another style of fountain, looked at one similar to that at Costco. The difference being the ball on top was round. I really liked it but the color wasn't what I wanted and I didn;t leave anyplace for the birds. Quite agree regarding bubbling or a trickle of water over the spray. I sometimes spray a section pof the yard for the birds while I water the plants, at least as far as the hose will spray. I really want to get one. Our neighbor lady had a birdbath, that was broken and the birds still used it. She had moved into assisted living and teh house is up for sale and they got rid of the birdbath. Bird land on my deck and I wish I had a bath for them. One with a battery option would be great. I'm sure of they can charge while in use and I'd kind of like one that won't freeze during winter. If it could run 24 hours it would be less likely to freeze.

blc, with this one you can take the battery indoors to charge it, takes 2 to 3 hours.

blc, Rosefriend, The bottom bowl has about 16" diameter which should be okay for the birds. Wondering though if it should be raised off the ground ...? I would, if only because cats are not the only predator they need to worry about, but a lot depends on your own situation. Saw something similar the other night and your link here gave me an idea. We have a large bowl with a heater that we used for one of our cats. I may see where that has gone to and see... oh nuts I just remembered, it is red. Birds don't like red and yellow. Still its an idea, to use a heated pet bowl even if just in the winter. I still want a fountain. I look at all sorts of places, just haven't found what I want at a price I'm willing to pay. blc, Rosefriend, The bottom bowl has about 16" diameter which should be okay for the birds. That sounds almost as bad as a situation we have just discovered here. We are still in the midst of doing landscaping here. Hubby put some mulch down and we noticed something the next day on the mulch. Pale in color, area about 8 inches by 6 inches. Got rid of it, and the next day and even larger area. Hubby says its a fungus of some kind. shows up like a sore thumb on the dark mulch. Its right where I want to plant my shasta daisy. So now I guess we need to dig there and see what is going on! lol blc, with this one you can take the battery indoors to charge it, takes 2 to 3 hours. Lots of things to take into account that is for sure. Its worth it if you can get all the features you want and that battery feature is a good one.
