Oooh GC rage Carolann ;D Find an article - print it off and go shove it in front of her nose! Poundland had some seed tatties today, they had Pentland Javelin and Rocket - 10 spuds for £1 (obviously ) I got a bag of Rocket - see if they live up to their name! x Tig Tig, I also bought the Pentland Javelin and Rocket from Poundland today. Also got 5 Kestral and 5 Pink Fir Apple from Wilkinsons. They all look fine to me and I will be chitting them tomorrow. I hope some peeps will help me. My Pink Fir Apple spuds have been"chitting" since I posted the above message. But alas, no "chits" on these spuds. All the other varieties are chitting well. Is it possible the Pink Fir Apple
are blind and when planted out will not produce anything? FB where are you?

PJ your PFA are notoriously slow to start chitting but don't worry. I've heard of people going ahead and planting them and they were still productive. Don't worry.

I thought I'd alread posted this but it seems not. On 16th/3 I planted out 2 rows of 1st Earlies, Swift and 17th March I planted my Salad potatoes Charlott, up at the allotment. Today I've joined the spuds thread with my 2nd earlies Maris Peer in containers. I'll be able to have tons of potatoes if they all do well for me, fingers crossed. I still have my main crop chitting and will plant them out after Easter. ;D Those are all a good size there CPB.

PJ, I'm no expert but I never chit my potatoes, I just plant them, so I shouldn't think it would matter if they had chits on them.

Sorry PJ,just seen your post,i have never grown Pink Fir Apple, maybe they are just late starters, they dont have to have shoots on when planted,as long as there is "life" in the seed,if they have been in the warm, and had the same conditions as your other ones,i dont know why they havent put out shoots,i would be interested to know if they have shoots now,or if you have planted them, they come up

Today I've lifted all that were left of my Charlotte potatoes. I'd been lifting a few these past weeks for a meal and finished the lot off today. I'm delighted with both the flavour and the quality. Success. ;D I still have in the ground my Maris Piper and some in sacks too but I'll leave them for another couple of weeks. I have plenty to keep me going.

You're way ahead of me LG. I have just lifted the first of my late-planted Ulster Sceptre and Ncola 1st/2nd earlies today (Friday). The Ulster Sceptre melted in your mouth, but I was less keen on the Nicola which I grew as an experiment so the new potato contract will probably go back exclusively to Ulster Sceptre next year!

I had to lift them Spruance as the tops were going all yellow and falling over, I was worried about the blight coming to them. I've got 2nd Earlies Maris Peer here at home in bags outside and will tip them out soon too. I had to cut their tops off last week as they were done. It's all a huge learning curve for me as you know this is my 1st time getting them to grow.

Well after a tentative furtle around last week we have now had around 1kg of home grown new potatoes every day for the last five days with plenty to go at yet. Thank goodness butter isn't fattening. ;D

Today I lifted my Maris Piper's from the 2 bags they were growing in. The tops had all died a couple of weeks ago although the ones in the ground are still nice and healthy and green. I got quite a few lbs of decent sized potatoes and had some for lunch. They were definately the tastiest of all the ones I've grown.

When would one start chitting potatoes if they are not earlies but mid time salad potatoes?
I do not care too much about whether it helps with growing but I so love to see those lumps get green tips ;D

I start chitting as soon as I get the seed potatoes Dutchy. If you end up with too many shoots you can rub some of them off.

As we tend to have a slightly longer winter I'll wait till February and chit them then. Though I have some almost invisible ;D small ones in the pack and I could try chiting those. Or would that be silly. ( They are almost 1.5 centimeter in diameter, thick as a thumb )
