Unless you're sowing seeds that are pretty big when they first germinate, does anyone just half fill their seed trays with compost ?
I remember doing this years ago when working as a commercial nurseryman and just having an inch of soil in the tray.
Should work for most plants that are going to be pricked out within a week of germinating or small growing stuff such as petunias and lobelia.

It's funny you should say that Andy I was wondering last week when I was planting toms. if you needed to fill the tray. great minds.
