watering flats of seeds for the first time is a pain....watching the water bead up on top and run over the sides, or running right through the mix without it getting wet...! What's the best way to fix hydrophobic soil? I've gone as far as putting a litte dish soap in the water (Dawn) to change the surface tension...

I don't know much about hydrophobic soil but I've heard about the trick of spraying with soapy water although it should be something organic. Also mixing a very good compost into the top few inches of soil might help and then watering very very slowly - perhaps one of those hoses with holes in that just drips...
