Does anything encompass the taste of summer more than a fresh strawberry picked and eaten in the garden? I always grow mine in large tubs pr growbags on the staging in the GH out of harm's way. This year I think I'll go for albion...grown it before and it cropped right through. I'm never how many plants to buy tho..the box I use is about 36" x 18" and 12" deep....any suggestions?

+1 for that CPB. I adore them...last year i bought 36 plants from homebase and they produced loads of strawberries....we were picking bowlfulls every other day.
So this year, ive potted up a load of runners and grown some alpine and woodland strawbs from seed (just starting to germinate yesterday)
last year i grew Albion, Elsante and Cambridge favourite. I'd like to get some later varieties this year.
love my strawbs !!!! ;D

I'd probably say you could get upto a dozen in that space Cheery I'm gonna get some new plants this year and hopefully have them in hanging baskets. Not sure on varieties but Albion seems familiar to me.

I've got Mara de Bois to try this year. They arrived before we went away at Christmas so are all in a big pot at the moment. They came through the snow and have grown a little bit but hopefully will get going when it gets a bit warmer.

One of the popular supermarket varieties (of the fruit not the plants) is Elsanta. These just don't hit the spot for me...probably beacause they're grown too quick/hot/dry etc in foreign countries. However, i bought some Elsanta plants last year from homebase, grew them in the ground and they were absolutely delicious.

The only way we will eat those hot house rushed varieties you get in supermarkets is in Nigella's strawberry crumble....it turns the blandest. hardest fruit into an absolute mega-sweet treat...with ice cream it's GORGEOUS... www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/strawberry_and_almond_38519

Where've they been over winter MRH because if they're used to being outside (in your little greenhouse say) then they'll be fine planted out. They are really hardy little things.

They have been in one of the mini GH's Jas...so I can plant them out now? Do I have to add anything to the compost? ie. feed

It might be a bit early for feed - what are you going to plant them in? Maybe plant them and feed them next month.

In a big concrete trough that is out the front...its a bit too heavy to move to the back garden.. Its about10-12inches deep.

I think I would plant them now and feed them in a few weeks when it warms up a bit and they get going properly.

I planted up my remaining strawberries into window boxes the other day. I'm not sure how well they'll do and I'll buy some when I see them in the GC.
