As some of us on here should form a society a bit like the RSPCA but for plants, I thought I'd start a thread where we could put our favourite waifs & strays. I got this Calla Lily in Sainsburys for 50p last year & a sorry sight she was too. I let her go dormant as she was well on the way already & then started her of again in February along with the Begonias. I didn't even buy this one, it was growing in an old pot that had fallen down behind the mini GH by the drain pipe & every time there was heavy rain & the pipe overflowed it sprang back to life again, so I thought it deserved a chance & it's perfect in this spot as I don't get any direct sun on this wall. As I wandered around the garden this aft it was easier to spot the things I'd paid full price for as I am a rescue plant sanctuary I thought I'd start with the acer orange dream, not bad for 50p last year and just because they are in flower and I love them, the petunias, 24 plugs of dusk to dawn bought from the reduced section in Tesco and not one died on me ... I'll post some more when things are in bloom or at their best. x Tig

Great thread Jilly. Now my garden is full I'll be limiting myself to rescue plants in future, so I'll be back

Here's a few more of my waifs & strays i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/smiley.gif Not only did I rescue this last year but I've actually managed to keep it going, (I'm not very good with Pinks) My bargain Lupins. This is my Sieboldii that I set free from the supermarket a few years ago, it was being tortured as a houseplant, wrapped about 6 times round a hoop & strangling its self. My only option was to cut the hoop out a bung the poor thing in the ground, where it's been ever since & comes back every year. Jillyx

Rescued some houseplants today What am I like? They were all bone dry & reduced to 50p each and I reckon if I can keep them alive until Christmas then some folk will become their new Parents - just a little extra ;D This will go to live with the Grandkids This will be off to my neighbour on the left and this will be off to my neighbours on the right and this probably won't last that long, so it might be compost by Christmas As with many houseplants bought at DiY outlets or Supermarkets the schlumbergeras look to have come with red spider mite, so that will be the first challenge to erradicate and ensure they don't spread to any of my own treasures! Not bad for £2 in total though x Tig

Are they Homebase rescues Tig. If so well done. I want to get hold of someone in there and say their poor reduced houseplants don't stand a chance of being re-homed if they don't at least water them

Well done Tig, definitely an act of charity to those poor plants, the Christmas cactus look happier already for a bit of moisture.

As you all know I am very charitable when it comes to adopting mistreated plants, think I heard them all sigh with relief. Jas it was Homebase, and the manager came along just as I was loading the basket - as I am a regular ;D I said to him "Yes, I'm here again giving a home to your half-dead plants" - he gave me quite a withering look as well, bet he would have liked to water me I'm not going back again until next year .... they didn't have the plant I'd gone to look for anyway, so I may be whizzing across Cannock Chase again in the morning x Tig
