I expect most folks gardens are pristine paradises i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/tongue.gif However it is nice sometimes just to let Mother nature take over a small patch and do her own thing, whether it is growing nettles, long grass, leaving piles of wood and leaves or just that place behind the shed! I have deliberately left a piece down the side of the garage, the wildlife seems to like it ... Anyone else want to share? x Tig

I like that Tig. In the Telegraph Garden section on Saturday Helen Yemm was standing for the relaxed informal lawn and Matt someone or other was doing the stripey sward campaign. Helen had put some willow hoops round a tree and let that patch do it's own wild flower thing - it looked lovely. I would love to have a go myself - will have to choose a tree.

That's lovely Tig I don't really have the space for an unkempt/wild patch, but outside the garden wall I'm allowing stinging nettles to grow up behind the young hedge in the hope that it will encourage insects. I can't do too much there because my neighbour has an annoying habit of mowing the grass for me!!

What a lovely idea Tig and fab picture. I think its wonderful to let nature completely take the stage. I find it very hard to do in our garden though. . I must try harder!

Hello FF, long time no see Well I have to be honest and admit that the side of the garage is like a little wildlife runway into the back garden, the fox, hedgehogs, toads and even a badger have used it over the years (not to mention all of the local moggies!) It is just a piece of spare ground and is in the shade for most of the year, apart from that bit There is one other area down the very bottom which is also allowed to do its own thing, a very shady and quite dry spot. I will try and remember to take a photo of it next time I have the camera out ... x Tig

We have several unkempt patches, in inaccessible corners - I'll try to reemember to take photos, but they are not very floriferous, more woodpiley and with patches of comfrey and brambles
