I was watching a cookery programme yesterday and they used Wasabi - Japanese horseradish.
Apparently the real Japanese horseradish costs over 50€ a kg in Japan and is very hard to get.
The stuff that we know as Wasabi is actually normal horseradish, salt, sugar, oil etc and colouring.....huh!!

heya
I visited a wasabi farm in japan one time. i'll post the photos in the next days or so. It looks like they need a lot of water, seems they were grown in rows, with rows of water trickling between each one. It's been a while. then we went to the shop and you could see the workers hand grating it. No wonder it's so expensive.
I like the idea of it in mashed pototoes. tbh, I avoid spuds like the plague. Had them nearly every day. For two people, it's a lot of cleaning up with a pressure cooker. We have a 110v rice cooker connected to a transformer. Put the rice in, add water, press the button and it's quaff some vino till it's ready....Very clean and little washing up. Sticky rice, not the Uncle Ben's type. We buy it in as big a bag as we can carry by bicycle. 10kgs.
Trying to thing what else to eat it with, apart from sushi (which we rarely have. At home, anyway)
hmmm.
And as for food I love that makes me cry/choke/cough, it's Thai Tom Ka Kai. Or, chicken coconut soup. Delish. Prob my favourite ever food....

Well, I need to admit that I actually had a chance to taste Wasabi in a Jelly Bean! There is a whole new kind here that cost a minor fortune, but imitate a lot of flavors you might never think of. They sent me a complete sample of all of the kinds they have, and this was included. Not quite the same as mixing them in mashed potatoes. www.amazon.com/gp/product/B007J6LBQA

I saw some Wasabi Jelly Beans a few weeks ago and was tempted but as OH said if we don't like them there is an awfully big bag of sweets to throw away and I somehow don't think that they would entice a small child...
BS - Horseradish Vodka Bloody Mary - do people really drink stuff like that??

I just waved an apologetic hand and walked off!!
