My cannas are very slow...the tropicanna has beautiful leaves but the other ones are still quite small...I'm hoping that they'll take off when the weather improves......hah......hahahahahahahahahahhaaaaa

So seeing as mine did'nt reach more than a foot hight should I let the compost dry out completly now and overwinter them dry? Do I cut the foliage off?

I leave mine in the ground LG, with the dead foliage on until the spring to help to protect the bulbs. Mine are still flowering beautifully, especially the orange ones with the dark leaves "Durban". Can't help you, I'm afraid, if they're in pots, but I think you treat them similarily to dahlias

That's what I thought Auricula. When I was in Botanic Gardens last week (see thread) they had some smashing Canna with great flowers. Maybe next year I'll get some too.

I dunno what to do with mine, they are huge and the tubers have distorted the buckets they are growing in! The only way I'll keep them frost free is if I bring them indoors x Tig

Bought some Cannas 2 years ago....they were ok but nothing special. Left them in their tubs all last winter and just assumed they were dead. Threw them on my spent compost pile and late in the spring, they emerged only to get to 4 foot tall with some of the most stunning flowers I've seen.
Well ive just gone down to said compost pile to find what rhizomes I had left and to my amazement, I have about 7 lovely rhizomes, all a good size, to pot up. This one was Wyoming....I found the label too. Also bought a black tropicanna, chocolate sunrise, Picasso and King Humbert.
All potted and on the hot bed.

Wyoming is a great colour combination isn't it andy,. Like you I bought a couple of wizened tubers in B&Q a few years ago, not really expecting anything from them. The gave me a couple of flowers in the first year, now I just cut them right back in the autumn & bung the pots in the porch, then take them out again in the Spring. The desperately need repotting (although I'm not sure how I'm going to get them out without breaking the pots ), but each year I've put it off & they've just got better & better with just a bit of extra compost & a feed now & again.

I bought some Canna seed this year. Not sure how long they will take to flower but I'm willing to give them ago. I'm guessing I will have to buy a propagator now.

I have 3 orange Canna Tropicanna bulbs (or corms? whatever) just arrived from J Parker. Their planting guide says they need a container at least 18" across by 18" high, I'll be planting 1 to a pot. They will go in the GH (heated) for now.

Did you know that cannas used to be grown for food? The tubers of some varieties are still used in the production of biscuits and noodles.
