Silene is a lovely plant but it is only half hardy, unfortunately mine didn't survive the winter

Are you talking about 'Jack Flash', Jean? I'm sorry you lost yours if it was. I admit that this is the first time I've grown this particular Silene, but I have several others which are hardy, and came through the winter with no problems. I do hope 'Jack' turns out to be hardy - I'm looking forward to seeing the real thing!

I was weeding around mine yesterday and thought about this thread....then, due to being 45 and consuming far too much alcohol in my life, i forgot about it !!!!
No buds on mine but the plants are looking really nice. Might take camera in tomorrow.

My Silene plugs from T & M failed to flower so I decided to send an email of complaint. I bought 42 plugs Silene Starburst which looked identical to Jack Flash. Not one flowered. T & M replied today and they have refunded the cost of plugs and postage plus an extra £5 so I have a token for £20. So very pleased I bothered to complain. It really is worth sending off an email. i221.photobucket.com/albums/dd161/GWDAdmin1/Smilies/Default/smiley.gif

In my garden I find that if the S&S's have been at the plant one year they tend to leave it the following year not sure why though? I planted a Blue and a White double Campanula a few years ago and the Blue one was munched right to the ground all you could see was a few little stalks thinner than grass but now its all over the place.

I just hope they survive the winter Andy! I shall blame Geranium if they don't cos she says hers did ;D At least I've had the joy of seeing their flowers, not sure I'd have stuck them in the 'red & white' border if I'd known they were more orangey, but hey, that border is now a kaleidoscope of colour anyway (what with me muddling up my penstemon labels ) x Tig

;D Fingers crossed, I've collected several branches off neighouring evergreens which I will put over the most tender plants this winter, the garden will look a mess but at least some 'semi-tender' things may survive x Tig
