I planted 36 seeds, I got 10 to germinate, now why, ? they are all in the same room sown together in a tray, watered at the same time nothing different at all, so, 26 must be duff, we're paying for empty packets sometimes aren't we.

I agree Barbara - we pay for too many duff seeds sometimes. Didn't Nicky's Nursery come out top of a Which survey last year for selling the most viable seed. What gets me is that one of the seed companies (Unwins ) is selling special packets of seeds that are guarateed to germinate - all seeds sold should hopefully fall into that category not just special extra expensive ones in posh packets.

Thats very true Jas. I know we would be asking a lot for the all to come up, every time, but it seems an awful lot don't make it.

It really gets me angry - all seeds should be viable....I expect seeds to be a little shaky if I collect them myself but if I pay good money for them then I reckon at least 80% should get through - if not more.

I agree and would write or email them to let them know.

I reckon 80% is not to much to expect from any seed really. Did anymore germinate, if not you go for it Barbara.

I agree and would write or email them to let them know. I didn't buy the packets of seeds I won them somewhere.

I notice there are 600 seeds in one of my packets - now if they all came up I would be flummoxed

Just sow a few of them Jen I agree its disgusting how many of some seeds dont germinate and they are not cheap really.

It's the time and effort that it takes to get the compost and containers and sow them, then waiting for them to germinate that's lost when the seeds are duds.

The problem you have with germination rates may be due to sowing the seed the wrong way up. I know it sounds daft, but apparently you need to sow them convex side up. Otherwise the roots will start growing out of the compost and shrivel before you even notice they have germinated. But how do you tell which way up they are when some are just like dust? ?
