Was going to suggest apple canker when I saw the first pic, then after seeing the last one, I'm more inclined to think it is squirrel damage.

Looks like some little furry creature has been visiting IMO

That's what I thought, but I'm in the middle of a council estate. I've never seen a squirrel here in over thirty years. Lots of pigeons.
I thought that middle picture looked like the bark was splitting by itself though. I'll keep an eye out for furry things though.

I had a woodpecker damaging the plum, in general that looks neater than what you have and no splitting of the stems. Why not get in touch with municipalty saying you fear a dissease that might effect other trees. They might send someone who can give the right answer.

I'm going on the assumption that it's some kind of damage, which could well lead to canker at some point so I'll lop them off. I was going to prune those particular branches come autumn anyway as one crosses another and the other hangs over the lawn and gets in the way when I'm mowing.

very late post here I can't see the images - I'm not sure if it's something to do with my computer??... but... I know I have had trouble in the past with the bark on my apple trees being damaged, and I have blamed it on badgers. I guess that won't be the case for you, but I'd be interested to know if you got to the bottom of it? Maybe it wasn't the badgers in my case? We do have woodpeckers and foxes around too.

I have a little problem with the apple tree we bought from Morrisons, it is growing leaves at ground level, and none anywhere else, we haven't planted it upside down, so what's going on here then.

Well that made me laugh - I just envisaged the roots as a great hairpiece up top...!!
The only thing that I can think of is that the top half is dead, or dried up partly...can you do the scratch test??

I can, but what then, if it's dead at the top but not the bottom is it any good ?.

No idea Barbara - I suppose that at least you know - don't suppose you can get your money back can you. ?? I mean it has got to grow, even if you cut it right back but you might just be making your first apple pie in about 10 years....
Hang on until others see the thread and there has got to be someone that knows more about apple trees than me, I am a complete novice..

It sounds as though the apple tree is dead Barbara and trying to sprout a fresh from the bottom in the same way it would if the tree were cut down and the roots left in. I guess that will leave more of a bush than a tree but you could take one sturdy new stem and make it a leader to become a new tree, this will take a few years. We lost one in the same way, I guess it's the just that they are selling very cheap, young bare root trees. I would email Morrisons customer services and see if they'll give you a refund and buy another tree. We have bought many from Morrisons and only one has done that, Bonnie bounced on one and broke the top off sort of doing the same thing to the poor tree. So on the whole they are good buys for a fiver.

The other thing that comes to mind is that most of these supermarket trees are grafted, and if it is growing from the very bottom the chances are it is the rootstock rather than the variety you wanted Barbara If it's at the lotty you could just move it to a 'spare' area and let it do it's own thing x Tig

We've decided to leave it and see what happens, it's at the end of the lotty so not in the way, we can always hang our coats on it .
