A few years ago a technician at the Toronto airport fuelled up a new Air Canada aircraft, and instead of reading the fuel gauge in gallons (plane was built in the U.S.), he read it as litres (metric system used in Canada). On its flight from Toronto to Vancouver on the west coast the plane ran out of fuel in mid air over Manitoba (central Canada). Fortunately for everyone, it was able to "glide" to a safe landing on an old Canadian Air Force base that was just within reach.
