Great idea RF. I was reading through the old thread earlier and it reminded me of doing up all those parcels and posting them off to their new homes.
I was just looking at my AF this morning and thinking how well it was doing due to the mild weather. It's got a lot of little 'eyes' ready to shoot. I'll try and get a picture tomorrow.

I was hoping to get mine into a bigger pot but haven't got around to it yet, on the list of jobs  I have put it in a sheltered spot and mounded up the compost in the pot incase we get any really low temperatures. |

Good question - the eyes under the earth mound will still be partially closed so I will leave them and see what happens....that of course is why roses are pruned properly in the Spring, of course....most winters this gets done for me!!!

Down to 3 eyes is a good prune for a Floribunda like AF....it makes it a lovely bushy rose, loads of blooms and no tell tell bare stems underneath...
Mine can happily be chopped back to half what it is now...

I'll prune mine in late winter then is that right? Geranium is right - I would wait until Feb/March, basically how good or bad the weather is - we prune later here in Germany and it is often April before we can around to it... "They" always say to prune your roses when the forsythias start to flower.. RF |

Roses are tough little things really but to keep that lovely growth I would just chuck a double piece of fleece over them..
Even if they freeze back totally they will be OK but it will take far longer for them to grow, of course..

EDIT:Anything in a tub/pot needs more cover than in the ground, unfortunately.

Good question - EG/AF will take a hard pruning but can you also cover it up a bit (if it is in a pot) - it looks as though we are really in for terribly hard frosts.
Perhaps you can post a pic later on and I can see how good it has got over the winter..

Looking at Jilly's roses.....one of them appears to be in a plastic pot ...some extra protection would be advisable, and is the pot on "feet"?.... Mine are just showing the signs of "pips"....they are in a sheltered spot and lifted off the bottom, so should be ok (fingers crossed ).... |
