They say here that rose growers must have "hard hearts and sharp secateurs"!!
Well done!!

I have taken a selection of photos of my Angelface, hopefully so I can get the best advice on how to prune it and stop it getting too congested! I did a bit of pruning out of crossing stems after planting it, but by the amount of new growth it is now showing it'll be a right tangled mass if I leave it Taken from above From the front (tiny bit of deadwood bottom right) and the 'back' view of it x Tig

Right Tig....erm...I don't know how to tell you this but....this needs drastic action - real hard stuff...if I were you I would sit down, grab a stiff drink, chuck it down your neck, gird your loins.....and get your secateurs sharpened!! This pic will tell you exactly where to cut !! Go on - take your hands away from your face.. Want a explanation?? Actually it is the back view of it that says that all is well - remember it is a Floribunda and should be bushy...and AF is a fantastic bushy rose. If you look it is just the way a healthy bush rose should be. The only one thing and that is your decision, is to rub off one of the two new shoots which can be seen well from the back... To make you feel even better about your AF - have a look at mine.... RF

Thank you soooooo much for the advice RF, I shall not muck it about too much then. It makes a change for me to have a healthy rose, they usually look more like your poor AF Hope it picks up for you, I thought you'd still got it in a container? x Tig

I am looking forward to seeing it flower Tig because there will be so many wonderful blooms on that....have you fed it yet??
I planted AF in the ground last autumn as after being in a tub for 3 years it really needed a bigger one or to be put in the ground....over minus 20 and no warming blanket of snow has made three-quarters of all my roses look like this - some are dead and I have dug them up already and with others I am just waiting to see if they grow from the sleeping eyes under the ground, just before the bud grafting...that is one of the reasons why the bud graft should always be under the ground.
I am going to prune all my roses tomorrow so will see what is worth trying to save and what not..

I have fed it already, threw some chicken manure pellets in the hole when I planted it, scattered f,b & b around that bit of bed in February, and when I watered my crown frits with tomato food this week AF got a light shower too ;D Should I give it a water with some fungicide/systemic pesticide soon? I hope your roses have 'sleeping eyes', I often have bags under mine x Tig

I hope your roses have 'sleeping eyes', I often have bags under mine x Tig Then it has enough until another feeding (with rose fertilizer if you can) around June - no later than July what ever happens... The best way to fight Black Spot, Mildew, Rust and Co is to prevent it rather than fight it... You can spray (water) even at this stage Tig with a system fungicide and two/three days later a pesticide and then again in 2/3 weeks the same... If it breaks out then you should use a different one from the one that was used initially - roses actually get used to the same one all the time and don't react anymore.... The bags under my eyes are big enough to carry things in them!! Glad I saw your answer RF, I was looking at Tig's pic on her thread & thinking mine looks like that & I wasn't planning on cutting any more off Hope your Angelface & your other Roses recover Jillyx Thanks Jilly - if you have any problems then just post a pic and I am sure we can sort things out... If mine is half dead, which it looks, I will get another one but it is sad... RF

Oh RF! Part of your Angelface looks green and healthy. What a shame. You haven't lost your gorgeous, gorgeous Abigaile have you?

I have lost possibly a third of my roses totally and some some have been weakened so much over the last 3 bad winters that I think it would be better to throw them out...we shall see once I have started to prune and see how much totally dead wood is around. Even if a rose has frozen back to the ground which happens here a lot there is always a chance that it will grow back well...
Guess what Jasmine - Abigaile is alive !!! Lot of dead wood but some lovely red "bits" that are showing a lot of life!!
