My little niece is going to see the paedriatrician today to check on her breastbone. A few weeks ago her Doctor started her on Vitamin D as the lack of it could be the problem. I have been very interested in the news today where they have been talkng about the effects of Vitamin D deficiency - I didn't know about this, did you? My nieces Mummy is from Thailand.

I know that people who are from less sunny climes can suffer from deficiencies because we don't tend to get much sun. There was talk of putting it into Scottish diets just like fluoride is added to toothpaste... However, vitamin D is a fat soluble vitamin and so I would be cautious about taking supplements, preferring instead to get it from the diet. Obviously if she's under instruction and the care of a doctor then she'll be fine, but I wouldn't advise everyone to start taking supplements. Some foods are already fortified with vitamin D anyway, and those of us who eat fish/meat should be OK. Here's some sensible info from the NHS though: www.nhs.uk/Conditions/vitamins-minerals/Pages/Vitamin-D.aspx

According to the news there has been a marked increase in the numbers of children presenting with rickets! The DoH Chief Medical Officer says that free Vitamin D supplements are available to all children under 5 whose parents are on state benefits, also pregnant mothers. www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-16696800x Tig

This is the result of people scaremongering about using factor 50 sun creams, we don't need it in this country, the sun is never as strong as it is in the antipodes.

I agree Barbara; down on the beaches here, in the summer, the poor little mites are swathed in cut off wetsuit like cossies and plastered with high factor cream.....they look like little clowns. Sensible precautions yes ( watch that they don't get burnt) but let their skins see some sun....................

I burn with factor 50 on when I'm sat in the shade lol But I make sure I have a balanced diet and take supplements occasionally as a top up.
