I know they should be taken in autumn from hardwood, but has anyone tried from new growth in spring?
I have a couple of bushed scattered about and abig gap down the bottom of the garden where cats cut through and traipse right across my seed bed. I was thinking of plugging the gap with something spikey that would give me a crop too.

I actually haven't much of a clue except that my late FIL used to take his cuttngs in the Spring before they started growing - whether you can take softwood cuttings, I don't really know...hope someone else posts...
Good idea with the barrier for the cats - stuck my hand in a pile this morning....yuk!!

Oddly enough I don't get much trouble from the muck, just the scratching things up and traipsing across everything.

I can't see any reason why softwood cuttings won't work PDB, worth a try. I wonder how long it would be before they were mature enough to fruit.

I did some hardwood cuttings a couple of years ago, to turn one bush into four. The cuttings fruited the following season. Hopefully if I take some this weekend they'll spend the year maturing and fruit next year.

Well I took a half dozen or so at the weekend and stuck them in a pot in the greenhouse. I suppose I'll be able to tell by summer if they took or not, then plant them out to settle in for the winter.
