This lovely compact and unsual Calendula grew from some seeds which came from Tig. (many thanks again) It starts out looking like many Calendula with a centre bud but has bumps all around it. Blooms normally and this is it dying off. Then when you go to dead head it you notice that the "bumps" are actually little flowers and they start stretching up away from the inital flower. To give this, lots of new flowers. I've never come across this before, has anyone else?

I think she unknowingly genetically modified it Rf. It was ment to be like all the others in the garden which are just normal. ;D

Aaaah I see - either that or it is the wonderful magic dust that gets sprinkled in your garden that makes it so special...

Thanks Rf, I'm hoping it sets some seeds so I can try to grow it again. It would be interesting to see what it's offspring look like. In any case, it's extra food for the bees.

Yes I agree Jasmine. The funny thing is that there are only a couple of the flowers that are behaving like this. The others on the same plant are normal looking Calendula.

Oh what a beauty Lady you may have a new species, I have sown some this year and I will keep a close eye on them to see if any are like yours, I hope you get some seeds off it you never know in a few years you could have your name in the T&M seed book as a new breeder along with Tig who sent you the seeds it will be very interesting to see if they come back next year so fingers crossed for them, oh we could be looking at a competition to find a name for them.

I did'nt get seeds the whole thing turned to mush and mildew due to the horrible weather. Still it was a nice plant while it lasted.

Never mind LG at least you had a nice show even though it was only a short time. Mine are coming out but falling over with all the rain on their heads not sure if I should go out and pick them all and bring them in-side to brighten up my days being stuck indoors.

I missed this thread LG What an odd thing to happen, can't say I've spotted any doing that, but I have so many I probably wouldn't notice! Think I will have to go on an expedition around the borders (calendula are everywhere) and see if I can spot anything with a similar tendency x Tig

It was very unusal Tig, it's a shame it did'nt set any seeds but you never know, it could happen again.
