Wildlife wotsit

Anyone know what this is. I found it while shifting a mound of soil on the allotment. It's about ?hree inches long and has a pinkish underbelly. I think it's brown but it was a bit dusty when it got rudely dug up, though it might have been worse, it narly got sliced and diced.

Needless to say the rest of the soil got shifted a bit more slowly.

I put the little fella under the rhubarb and out of sight of the birds.

It's a dinosaur!!!!!!!!!!!!! ;D

Bit difficult to tell what markings it has, if any, under the mud, but it is either a common newt or a palmate newt I reckon

For a minute I thought it was. Thought I'd clobbered it with the spade, then I picked it up and it started to wander about my hand ;D
