I have this little item which is possibly porcelain with a metal trim. It's 8cm long and about 4cm high when closed. Any idea what it is or what it is used for?

Has it got any marks on the bottom Rony?
It could be a sewing needles & pins box, if it is older it could be a trinket or patch box

A "useful box", RM! Sorry - I shouldn't make silly jokes. Maybe an antique shop would know its origins? Has it got any marks on it anywhere?

Looking at it I wonder if it could be enamel rather than porcelain, especially with the metal mounts Think I would go with trinket box, covers all uses then x Tig

Tig, I think you're right, it could well be enamel. I don't think it has any great value but it is quite unusual. Next stop eBay, I think.
